Addressing the FCC mandate to drive the analog-to-digital television transition, LSI Logic Corporation , a leader in innovative digital media processing technologies for the Digital Home, today introduced the DoMiNo(R) 8633 (DMN-8633) and 8683 (DMN-8683) ATSC-compliant HDTV DVD recorder system processors.

Based on the market-proven LSI DoMiNo architecture, DMN-8633 and DMN-8683 are highly-integrated, single-chip processors capable of simultaneously decoding and displaying HDTV content, while recording content onto DVD . By performing this capability in a single device, the DMN-8633 and DMN-8683 maintain the highest possible video quality while enabling the lowest-cost ATSC-compatible HDTV DVD recorder solution.

To address the FCC mandate, DVD recorder manufacturers will need to add HDTV /ATSC tuner capability (consisting of a digital tuner, an 8VSB demodulator, and an ATSC-compliant HD decoder processor) to their existing DVD recorder systems. Manufacturers using alternative solutions to DMN-8633/83 that require separate processors will see reduced video quality and find the implementation expensive and complex. The DMN-8633/83 HDTV DVD recorder processors are able to decode both digital SD and HD ATSC signals and record to HDD or DVD while maintaining the highest possible video quality.

The DMN-8633/83 processors both decode and display full HD video via HDMI, with DMN-8683 providing the additional capability of enabling time-shifting of HD video -- high-definition DVR capabilities. By integrating and eliminating the separate HD decoder and additional memory components, the DMN-8633/83 solutions reduces system costs by as much as $15. In addition to reducing system costs, the DMN-8633/83 simplifies both the hardware and software development needed to support ATSC, thus shortening time-to-market and enabling manufacturers to meet the March 2007 deadline.

The DMN8633/83 processors support multiple audio and video encoding and decoding formats, as well as industry-leading DVD recorder features, such as DVFX(TM) video pre- and post-processing technologies for the highest-quality video; Direct Digital Dub(TM) technology that simplifies the transfer of personal digital content from a camcorder to DVD over FireWire; YesDVD(TM) intelligent software solution making the automatic editing and conversion of home video easy; and fully integrated support for USB digital cameras and Flash Cards. DMN-8633 and DMN-8683 maintain software compatibility with previous generations of LSI DoMiNo processors to preserve software investment. Both products are part of LSI's third-generation, single-chip DVD recorder system processor family that is designed to reduce system cost, design complexity, and time-to-market (http://www.lsilogic.com/products/recorder_dvd_dvr_dtr/ ). Pricing is $20 for the DMN-8633 and $25 for the DMN-8683 in high volumes.
