I was tempted to get one but now Im happy that I held out.  Different web polls put the defects around 10-20%.  M$ has admitted problems but claim the numbers are lower than whats being reported.  However, they refused to disclose the number of customers reporting problems.  That has lead many to suspect that the numbers are pretty high.  I think Ill hold out until next year once the bugs are worked out and the price is dropped.

Here is some more info.

I was one of those unfortunate people that waited in line to get one for my son. My son did not even get to play one game every time he would start to play a game (tried 3 different games) the X-Box would lock up. This machine sucks. Looks like I am one of the unfortunate one's.

There are PS fans and there are Xbox fans.

I've owned them all. PS1, PS2, Xbox and now Xbox 360.

Never a problem with either of the Xbox flavors. Have had 3 PS1's and 2 PS2's. All disc reader glitches.

IMHO, Xbox 360 is fantastic. No problems at all. We own Madden '06, Kameo and Comdemned. Not a glitch or drop or issue. Downloaded demos, games and trailers (HD, BTW) without a problem.

Because of my issues with the Sony line, I will not be purchasing PS3. Period.

Remember, it's the first production run of a very advanced system for Xbox 360.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Did you get a replacement ?

I've been playing many different games virtually non-stop without a problem.

Please don't condemn the product for a production issue.

Is there enough units out there to get a replacement?

Every store is sold out.. and most places aren't expecting new shipments until the middle or end of December.  I wonder if MS will think this is a big problem and make that later.  I hope not because I want it soon, but then again I don't want to get a bad system.

I agree with you on this one. All my friends PS2s are either on their 2nd or 3rd DVD drives. They either stopped reading CD media or DVD media or BOTH. That's cuz Sony put a cheap drive in it.

Don't even get started on the PS1's cheapo drive in it as well. Anbody remember the infamous play your PS1 on it's side or upside down so the drive will read cuz of premature wear on the optical pickup drive shaft?

I never used my PS2 enough for my drive to die on me. I use my Xbox the most and my launch day Xbox is still going strong.

My only issue with the PS2 is that for some reason the optical output sounds glitchy now even though it worked well for a couple years. It will have cutouts in audio for no reason and often enough to bug you. The optical output port is clean, so it ain't that. My optical cable is fine because when I use it on my HDTV STB or my progressive scan DVD player, I have no problems at all. Strange that the optical would start going out considering there is no moving parts and I think it's a LED output and not laser.

I will be getting the 1 year service contract with my 360, so it should be smooth sailing if there is a problem. I'm near the end of the list of 25 remaining at my store, so at an average rumored shipment rate of about 10 consoles a week, that would mean I get mine in about 2-3 weeks.

I can wait. Microsoft warned us a few months ago of shortages, so I'm not freaking out over it like some people. ;)

IMO, just another industry for Microsoft to take over.  BTW, I plan on getting one as soon as I can afford to.  :)

Can't wait for the el-cheapo Sony Blu-ray drive.  :)
