I'm sorry, but I can't justify paying $7.65 for the box plus $44.99 for "Digital Value" plus  $6.95 for "HD Package" and $10 more for HBOHD.

$70 minimum to get only 8 channels plus locals is completely unacceptable.

I'm of the opion that the 12.5 HD channels that TWC offers is

a pretty darn good deal.....    FSN-HD counts as a half channel..

$6.95 for the TWC Cable STB & $7 for the 5 addon HD HT channels is Good..

Dump the $45 Digital Value Pack & dump the $10 HBO options.....

Yes, and we all just lost PBS-HD so 5 or 6 networks of 7 Majors

remain HD.......     on an OTA basis.....

Joseph S

They won't let me dump the "Digital Value Pack" and that's the problem. You can only get locals plus HBO or SHO.

We still have PBS-HD in Milwaukee.

Hey, just pick up US Digital when that rolls out.  For $20 you'll get all the local HD's (well whoever's left broadcasting in HD).  :)

I could never justify paying for their HD (INHD, HDnet...) package.  I never considered the content that good (except Hogan's Heroes, that was the best). :D

Looks great, however the they seem to lack a PVR or firewire outputs for D-VHS. :( I'll probably end up with a satellite service when I move if things don't change with TWC.

Another thing is the accompanying increase in TWC RR charge when I drop CATV. Any issues switching to Earthlink over Cable? They have a cheaper monthly rate plus a promo rate for 6 months too.

Do not forget SBC DSL for $14.95/month.

And don't forget about the free calling plan to India with SBC......

It's SBC DSL support...let's see you get something fixed...that's why I left and went to TWC.

We had some problems with SBC DSL at work three years ago. Now it works fine. Reboot (approximately once a month) fixes all connection problems. And I will switch to DSL as soon as it will be available for me at home. I can't beleive that my number is not eligible yet. After switch I will be 100% cable free.

I'm not getting SBC DSL until they allow me to drop the landline too and up the speeds. Had Mindspring DSL I think before Road Runner was available. It took about a month to get the line connected by Covad and then Ameritech had to do something else with it afterwards.

There's a speed advantage with Cable I find worth the extra money. Lucky enough to have gone to college when dorm ethernet was installed and left just months after they let some of us test out the initial roll out of the first Internet2 hookups 6 years ago. Glad I did't get hooked on that, but broadband itself is definitely a vice. Unlike many in the mid-late 90s I didn't have to suffer with another modem after 28.8s. Missed the entire 56K debacle. :)

It all depends on what you get from Directv or TWC for pricing/programming.
It all seems, at least until the next satellite goes up (whenever that is) about the same and until Directv offers more HD channels (National ones, until we get LiL HD locals) that their HD programming is about equal with the delivery of HD locals, most forum members can get OTA on their HD Tivos, anyway (not me).

Right now, the TWC  $44.99 Digital package plus $10 HBO, $5 Showtime, $6.95 HD package and $14.90 for the HD DVR box with service equals $81.84.

Directv's similar Total Choice is $41.99 plus $12 HBO, $11 Showtime, $10.99 HD package and $5.99 for DVR service (you buy the box) equals $81.99.

This doesn't include (or subtract) the RR savings of $5 if you get RR with cable service or the additional $5 off Digital Phone if you desire that.

So it adds up, for now, about the same pricing and options for either one.

Personally, I like talking to a local person at TWC when I have a situation with  any of my services with them, not someone elsewhere in the country (or India)!

Your choice...but if you want us to agree there have been no HD Channel additions at TWC for a least a year, you're right...that sucks!

Oh you must not have gotten the latest bill. The new "Men's Channel" and a bunch of shopping channels are coming at the very end of November. (Snicker)

The problem is some of us don't watch any of 100-499 and very little of 2-99. Maybe charge twice the rate for the HD Package, but don't try to shove the "Digital Value or Digipic" down our throats when we don't watch them or have a TWC PVR. Finding out that I only "saved" $5 by cutting 100-500 was rather annoying.

The good news is I'm going to be able to see Game 3 of the ALDS in HD elsewhere or in person. :) Whereas it will be in crappy analog on ESPN2 here.

So how much will you be paying to get only HD from DirecTV or Dish Network? (And can you include HBO HD and Showtime HD without paying the full price for *all* the versions of those movie channels?)

AndrewP

With Dish Network technically you can order only HD channels - $10 for HDPACK (TNT, ESPN, HDNET, HDNET MOVIES, DISCOVERY) and/or $5 for Voom 10 originals HDPACK. If you will not select basic package (AT60 is the least expansive) they will charge $5 more for not ordering the basic package.
So max. HD only total is $20 for 15 HD channels.
Now fees:
First basic HD receiver - free, for 2, 3, 4th,... - $5 per receiver.
HD DVR - $5 DVR fee (it will work with two TVs, you can watch two seperate programs on two TVs at the same time). It will be $5 DVR extra fee if it is not connected to the tel. line.
BUT: In order to select only these channels you should own the equipment. The Dish favorite lease deal (free basic HD, 250$ extra charge for HD DVR) will not work here. With lease you should select one of the basic packages with locals.
It is $32 for AT60 with locals.

So with Dish you can have 15 HD satellite channels and all local OTA (with OTA antenna) for $20/month.

Hmm... I don't suppose Dish will work with a VOOM receiver? :D

(I got one for a cheap OTA tuner)
