Why UHF-only antenna?

From what I understand the VHF channels 7-13 are not being released and we (MKE metro) have some digital channels using channel 8, so why is everyone buying the UHF-only antennas?
Will a UHF-only antenna still receive VHF signals (just not very well)?

The Channel Master 4228 receives hi-band VHF very well.  I'm about 25 miles SW of the antennas (Town of Vernon) and I pull frequency 8 at a 90 signal strength.  This is remarkable in that I live in a heavy woods (70'+ trees) on the backside of a glacial mound.  I wish I could get FOX that as well. Fox is my only problematic channel and I hope that will be corrected soon as they finally go full power.

Here is my station and signal strength chart with the CM 4228.

Station / Network / Channel / freq / SS-7/05

WPXE / PAX / 55.1 / 40 / 91
WMVT / PBS / 36.1 / 35 / 82
WDJT / CBS / 58.1 / 46 / 82
WMVX / PBS / 10.1 / 8 / 90
WTMJ / NBC / 4.1 / 28 / 91
WISN / ABC / 12.1 / 34 / 95
WCGV / UPN / 24.1 / 25 / 79
WVTV / WB / 18.1 / 61 / 74
WITI / FOX / 6.1 / 33 / 50

A good UHF OTA Antenna with receive UHF very nicely

(Chans 14-59) and also receive VHF HI channels 7-13 over

shorter distances quite well.       Digital is an all or

nothing signal with drop outs & pixelization in between.

A VHF Lo antenna for Channels 2-6 has big, clumbsy

elements.    A UHF Yagi or the UHF 2/4/8 bay bow ties

are compact in one or two dimensions.

long story short, you can pick up channel 8 with a coat hanger... literally. in other words, even though the bow ties are UHF only most of them will pick up channel 8 just fine.
