Anyone build their own PVR lately?  Looking to replace my VCR and have been waiting to see if any good HD DVRs would be coming online.  Don't record much, and don't like paying TIVO or TWC monthly fees.  Thought of building my own with Windows Media OS and a turner card.

you may want to consider a Sony High-Definition Digital Video Recorder DHG-HDD250.  Of course unless you enjoy playing around with hardware software that doesn't always work.     Note: this is not an endorsment I don't own it but was thinking about it myself.

MCE 2005 is a fine system but it has a problem of being based on windows and having to deal with all kinds of hardware; so as any computer system it's not as stable as it should be.  it also requires pretty powerfull cpu, graphics card for HD.

I noticed this unit before - I seem to recall someone having it on sale for $599 not that long ago. I notice from the mfgr's page that it is CableCard compatible. Has anyone here used this until with Time Warner Cable SE Wisconsin? I realize that CableCard doesn't support the interactive program guide, but I would be very interested in knowing what features ARE supported. Is there an alternative program guide that is being broadcast over any of TWC's channels?

As far as alternative guides go, if the unit has TVGuide built in it will receive guide information from TWC, this is a feature that uses the data coming on channel 2 (hidden), if it doesn't work that way and OTA antenna can pick the guide up from an over the air station....once again this is only if it has the TVGuide service software installed like the Toshiba and Sharp Digital TV's have.

I would have built one, but couldn't find a PC based card that did both DD 5.1 (or better) and video without jumping through hoops to sync the tracks back up after it's recorded.  That was over a year ago.

I'm hope things have changed though.  Audio is as important to me as HD is!  A movie with great quality and not sub woofer and surround just isn't a movie worth watching!
