Fox 6 to go digital

Originally published 2005-07-25, Small Business Times

WITI-Channel 6 in Milwaukee will be one of six Fox Television Stations Inc. news-gathering stations in the nation that will be converted from an analog-based system to an Avid end-to-end digital production system for its content. Fox announced that WITI and five others of its 27 stations will receive the upgraded technology to be provided by Tewksbury, Mass.-based Avid Technology Inc. The others to be upgraded include: WNYW, New York City; WTXF, Philadelphia; WFXT, Boston; WTTG, Washington DC; and WTVT, Tampa. Installation has begun at all six stations and is expected to be completed by the end of 2005. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. "The transition from tape to digital production requires a substantial overhaul of infrastructure and workflow," said Earl Arbuckle, vice president of engineering for Fox Television Stations. David Schleifer, vice president of Avid Broadcast and Workgroups, said, "As a leading broadcaster in the U.S., Fox clearly understands the benefits of going digital. With our solutions in place in these well-respected top-rated markets, Fox will have the most advanced, cutting-edge and sophisticated technology for digital news production on the market. We are thrilled to help bring them to the front line of digital broadcasting."

Wow, that is good news.  Hopefully they will go full power before the transition is complete.

Actually any reader of these forums knew about this months ago as it was reported here that they were upgrading their studios to pure digital.  However while this is going to be a pure digital studio, remember they aren't going HD with local programming yet, however when they decide to it will be a very easy upgrade as the studio is going to be ready for it.
