Good day all!

I work as an engineer for The Brew :guitar:    which transmits from the WISN-TV tower and our transmitters are in the same building.

IF...and I repeat IF I can get permission from WISN-TV, would anyone be interested in see what one of these things looks like?  Any other techno-geeks out there like me???

Hee Hee,  I suppose it's one of those big klystron tubes that are about a foot in dia.  Like you see iin some of the sci-fi movies? :D

Actually they are not klystron they are called IOTs  (Inductive Output tubes).    All the new analog and digital  transmitter use this type.  I will see if I can get some pictures together.

Hey Kent,

Welcome to the Forum!!!  We have met a few times at the Madison GTG's put on by either Olig or Dvorak.   You know me as well as a FM & TV Dxer.

I recently got a Samsung Digital TV Tuner Converter thru the David Janowiak Estate and now I can watch DTV on the big analog TV besides the Win-TV-D Hauppaughe Card.

In a few months time if I can't sell all of Dave Janowiak's items I might post some of them here in the forum.  Because I have a lot of his used TV antennas in my garage and I am trying to get rid of them.

Anyways, glad to see you here and yes I'd be interested in seeing pics of a DTV transmitter.

Rumor has it that someone in the Milwaukee area is planning to host the World TV FM DX Association convention in a few years and I have yet to get in contact with that individual, and perhaps arrange TV or/and radio station tours for the convention people.

Anyways, feel free o post them pics and again always be interested if and when you intend to take a FM transmitter down so I can see if I can receive any distant FM stations on those frequencies.

I hope to see you in Madison on Aug. 20th.

WDJT will have pictures of their new transmitter (and possibly the new transmit antenna) on their website tomorrow, //www.cbs58.com.  Our transmitter will use two MSDC (Multi-Stage Depressed Collector) tubes, similiar to IOTs, but a lot more power efficient and newer technology.  The easiest way to relate the theory of this type of tube is similiar to the ST/TNG episode where Geordi tapped the warp drive at more then one point for more power flow.  This design is made by Thales and is called their Paragon series.  The older solid state cabinet "Beachhead" series transmitter for DTV (to the far left side of the new transmitter) is being replaced with the new 2 tube/cabinet system Paragon for the increased DTV power.  Enjoy when we finish this project!!  When I have the time, I'll try to post some pictures here of a standard IOT tube and one of the new MSDC tubes.

Thanks Dan, I've seen pics in Digital Television Magazine, but I'm sure you're going to come up with better ones.  We know that ad execs just try to make everything look very glossy and streamlined.

In what section of the website should we look for those pictures?

Thanks.

The website section the pictures will be under is the "Technical" page.  Under that we will have a sub-page called "More Power - Better Signal" or something like that.  All of it has yet to be posted, but they are working on it.
Our new antenna will be in town today, and our tower crew will be arriving on site Sunday.
We will have to take the digital signal off air once our tower work starts, which looks like Monday the 27th, weather permitting.  For cable HD viewers, our SD signal will be remapped to the HD channel temporarily while the work is being done.  Weather permitting once again and no other problems, we should be done with the tower work in 2 or 3 days.  Most likely when we return to air, our Beachhead transmitter will still be our transport as we finish work on the new Paragon.  There will be a slight signal strength increase because of the new antenna.  Once the new Paragon is up and running, you will see the big signal strength increase.  For those of you using amplifiers, the amplifiers may overdrive the signal going into your receivers since their input will then have a greatly increased signal strength.  You may, or may not, have to remove such amplifiers if the signal is too much for your receivers.

I love picture number 4. It looks like it should have a caption that reads "Wasn't this thing supposed to come with instructions?"

Its not a slam against anyone or anything. It just popped into my head as soon as I saw the picture.

Don't laugh. That happened to me from that same transmitter manufacturer. It took over a year to get the manuals for it. True story.

I'd love to see some pics if you can get 'em?   Who all broadcasts from your facility? Is it just WISN TV/DT and The Brew, or are there others?

Thanks in advance!

Yup that is it at that tower.

We are moving one of out FMs over the the American Tower (the big three spire tower) that houses WMVS/WMVT et al....  That FM is presently at the Ch 24 tower.  I have never seen anyone there from Ch 24 or 30, so I have never been inside their facilities.

Let me see what I  can do.
