I am wondering if anyone can give me some feedback on the ED Palsma TV's.  I am looking for one as a second TV for the house.  I really don't want to spend big bucks on another TV since we just upgraded our theater room to a 65" HD set.  I kinda have my eye on a 42" LG ED Plasma.  My thoughts are to pick one of these up and hang it above the fireplace in our living room.  (yes, the fireplace is gas so it should be okay)  Does anyone have any feedback on ED sets.  The Smasung and the LG are the only two I have seen that I really have liked.  The pictures are great for only being an ED set.  They are both close in price sitting aound $2300.  The cheapest HD 42" I have found is $3899 which is more than I want to spend.

Any feedback or advise would be great!

Thanks!

Personally I would never buy Plasma. I think they are all hype and not a very good choice. I think if you really want a flat screen, your money is better spent on an LCD panel. Plasma uses lots of power, generates a lot of heat, they have a short life span and burn in very easily.

Just my 2 cents. Lots of people will disagree.

I wish I could find a 42" LCD.  Can't find one yet.

Also beware of reflections.  If the front surface looks like a shiny panel of glass, you might only be able to view it in total darkness without being annoyed.  I will only buy non-reflective displays or ones that can be easily made to be non-reflective.  I might be more sensitive to this that other people.

Good point.  I will keep an eye out for that.  Didn't even think of non-reflective!!

I have read many, many reviews that say the Panasonic line of ED plasma's are the best out there. Of course they are slightly more than LG.
Also....LCD panels are nice (well some are like the AMAZING Sharp Aquos but most are crappola) but pretty expensive for that size. A 45" Aquos will set you back between $5000 and $8000.

Plasma technology seems to have gotten significantly better since the "early" days. I've heard and read that while burn in still can happen, the life expectancy is gotten way better...20,000 hours plus, and the failure rates have dropped as well. If the convienence of a flat TV is what you need..for now plasma is the best deal....until LCD pricing drops.(Gawd...did I just say that plasma is a good deal   ???)

I agree w/Matt.  In fact, I almost bought a Panny ED until I came across the Pioneer HD at a good price.
I looked at the LG HD plasma -- and was in route to buy one untill I became very disapointed in the banding issues I observed at Flanners.  IMO, it was the worst picture of the plasma bunch.
Burn-in is a concern but managable IMO.  The plasma I have blows away my Sammy DLP.
My Pioneer is rated for 60,000 hours.  (8/day for 7500 days (20 years))  It will last (maybe), but hope to have something new long before that.  Meanwhile I am sure the performace will degrade some what.
Good luck on your decision.

PS:  Just invisioning a mantle mount gives me a stiff neck... think about location some more.

the 20,000 hour thing is a thing of the past.  They now claim 60,000 hours on the new sets.  Still not total sold on dropping that kinda coin for a second TV that really isn't used as much as our BIG screen.  The more feedback and info I get the easier the choise will be.

Thanks!

I had heard that plasma's were up to that kind of hours, but wasn't real sure if I was thinking plasma or some other technology, so I went with a numbert I knew was safe...20,000 hours which is still alot. 5 hours a day, 365 days a year, apprx. 9.2 years. I think thats better than my CRT RPTV....

I spent some time looking at the LG last night at a LG Dealer.  WOW, ED sure is good.  They were running HD-Net off of the DTV signal though the coax input and it look really good.  I would run it thought the DVI or component input.  He had HD Plasmas too.  From what I could tell in the $1400 difference ED is amazing and the way to go if you aren't in the mood to spend that kinda coin!  The WOW factor between standard and the HD/ED images were great.  If we decide to go with a Plasma it will be ED.  They sure look good!

Keep in mind that Dell offers a 42" HD Plasma set for $2,999.  Here is a research thread for you: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?threadid=468403
