Without making a federal case out of one pricing event, I needed a new Terk 5X8 multi switch.  So, I went to a local electronics "super store", and there was one for $149 plus tax.  It seemed pricier than I remembered, so I cranked up the internet, and there was Solid Signal at half the price, with local tax from the store about equal to shipping charges from SS.

I just don't like being ripped off, so SS got the order.

Sadly, the fixed operating costs for B&M stores will make this more and more the case in the future.  Since they have to shave their margins on big box items like TVs and appliances they try to make it up on middle range items and high margin stuff (And trying to sell you annoying insurance policies on your electronics).  Especially on high margin items like cables it's just not possible for B&M to compete with the low overhead of a place like pccables.  I recently ordered 4 Firewire cables (including 2 15ft ones) delivered for less than the cost of one 6 foot one from any local retailer.  Caveat Emptor and all that.

I welcome the evolution of retail from B&M to Online.  Going to the store is a hassle in my opinion.
