Hello all,
T.W.C. delivered my hd box today. Before I had this box I had the standard digital box that my T.V.(Elite 530) would stretch to full screen. The new box shows all non H.D channels in 4x3, is this because the new box is hooked up via componet cable vs. coaxial cable. I also have a Samsung ota stb. The Pioneer only has 2 componet inputs, so I ran the hd box direct to input 1 on T.V., and ran the dvd and the stb to reciever and then out to input 2 on T.V.. Everything seems to be working fine, does this set up sound correct to you guys(and gals). Any input(no pun intended) would be appreciated.

Thanx,
WOZZ

Well it sounds like a workable plan to me.  If it is working for you then I see no reason to change it.

Welcome to Milw HDTV, by the way.

I am not familiar with the TWC box but I have an Elite 510 and can tell you how my setup works.  Any 1080i or 480p signal that is detected on the component video inputs will force it to display as a Full Screen mode.  In other words, it assumes that the aspect ratio at the component video inputs is correct and does not allow you to do any stretching with Natural Wide or Cinema modes.  In order to be able to stretch the video picture, you are going to have to find a way to get a 480i signal from the HD box into the S-video or composite jacks.  Hopefully it has this output capability.

It is possible that your TWC box may have the capability of stretching the video picture before it outputs to the component cables.  Go through the menu setup, assuming it has one, to see if it can do that.

Hope this made sense.

That's pretty much how mine is set up as well.  The only thing I did differently was to hook up the coax on the Ant input and the s-video to Video 2 so that non-HD channels could be stretched. (You don't need to do both, just one or the other.)

I presume you have the SA 3100HD digibox.

If this is connected vie the component outputs then the SA will upconvert all SD material to 1080i and will play black bars on either side.  I find the SA will also play a little stretch to the program but I do not find this offensive.

I do not know about your Elite, but most HDTVs when detecting a 1080i input will go to full mode (16:9) and will lose all capability of picture formating.  Hence if you are receiving a letterboxed SD broadcast, you will not beable to zoom it if you are inputing it to the TV via the component output of the SA.  The SA does not offer any picture sizing options for SD material it upconverts to 1080i.

To work around this issue, you will need to run an SVHS cable from the SA to the Elite.  You will then be able to control the picture size via your TV's internal line doubler.

BTW, welcome to the club!

Hello again,

When using my HD cable box hooked up via componet cables, closed caption will not work. Is this normal? Also when using the Samsung stb with a r.s. bow tie antenna I'm recieving 4-1, 1-1 thru 1-5 and 10-1 thru 10-4. If I was to recieve channel 6 feed, which nobody seems to recieve. What channel would the Samsung map it to.

Thanx for all the help everybody

Channel 6 dtv is physically on channel 33 but maps to 6-1.  I can receive it only during the day before 5pm...but I wouldn't worry about it...it's only broadcasting 480i. No upconverts nothing.

I receive a 51-58 signal on channel 6 if I run the bow tie outside.. I am about this close to having my wife and my father-in-law (landlord) let me put an antenna up on the roof.
