Here's a link to a national site with some cool info regarding DirecTV's plans for HD.

Wow!

"Also a customer with an HD Tivo box will have their box replaced for free with the basic HD DVR or they can choose to lease the HD multiroom DVR. Either way still gets free installation with 1 year agreement."

Where's Mark Strube?

Would you give up the HD Tivo? If I had Dish, there's no way I would give up a known commodity that can be used to offload PVR data for later viewing/increased storage until at least such time that Blu-ray recorders are around.

I'm not sure if I should be happy I put off getting a HDTivo or if I should run out and get one now so that I'll get the replacement with no rental charges associated.

I will not give up my HD Tivo until I no longer have a choice. Plain and simple. And it isn't just me. My wife would seriously kill me if I ever got rid of Tivo. She complains constantly about her mother's SA8000HD...

eventually everything will go to MPEG4. Hopefully at that time TiVo (supported by Apple?) will have their CableCard unit out at which time I will probably move to cable. Otherwise I guess I won't have any choice but to move to DirecTV's new MPEG4 unit (provided D* is still cheaper than cable at that time).

Pretty much a lose/lose scenario unless Tivo comes out with their cablecard unit sometime "soon".
