I prefer this test... it seems to be more accurate, and I know it's local.

Well that charter site just gave me 4.9Mb/s inbound.  That's ridiculous speed

If you are not getting the speed you expect, try swapping out your modem it it is more than a couple of years old.   I had noted that my speed had gradually been dropping from about 2.1Mb/s down to (at time) a lowly 100-200kb/s.  Very poor.  Typically I was only getting around 700kbs-1mbs.  Then over the new year we lost out internet connection.  We called tech support and the got the modem working again, but mad the comment "oh I see you have an old 3com modem [that I've have had since June 2001].  We don't like those any more as they can be problematic.  Come in a swap it out".

I few days later I did, and my connection speed shot up to over 2mb/s.  Now with the upgrade to the network I hit 4.9Mbs!!  Awesome.  So swap out those old flaky modems....

The link I provided is more local than the one you posted above...

Does anyone on side of tosa have the faster RR yet?  I unplugged my modem, let it sit for about 20 minutes, plugged it back in, tested at 1AM and only got around 1700 kb/s.  I called TWC and they said that they are still in the process of upgrading and some areas have not yet been upgraded.  I just got RR two weeks ago and Im a little bothered by the latency (dns server seems a little slow or something b/c it takes a second or two before pages begin to load).  Now if this is the max Im going to get then Im going to complain and/or switch back to DSL.

I tried this last night here in Racine.  I had normal (sub-3 Mbps) speeds when I first tested, and after unplugging my 4-year-old SB4100 and plugging it back in, I have speeds in the 4.5-4.9 Mbps range. :)

WOW... well I guess you win! That's what you want... right?

I believe I used the word prefer, I didn't say it was closer than anything else. I prefer it because it gives 10 seconds for each test instead of making you download and upload 3.02MB (which takes awhile on upload). Anyway, Madison is extremely close relatively... how many sites in Milwaukee (besides this one) would people realistically visit and download stuff from regularily? Overall, I think it's a better test.

4.73 Mb/s

Nice

And you stated you "know it's local".  If 'local' includes anywhere within 90 miles, then I guess you're right.
I was merely providing clearer detail on the link I provided relative to your site in Madison.
If one would want internet related issues outside of the local network to be included in speed test results, go anywhere --- some place in China would be a good spot because it's probably a worst-case scenario.  However, if anyone would prefer to test their speeds (or compare them to the speed off the China server)  using a speed test server located within the local network, my link may be a solid alternate.

Just tested at 4.85 Mb/s. I don't know if I have been upgraded from RR or not. I never tested my speed before.

Mark Strube

That would be the upgraded speed. It wouldn't go above 3-something if it wasn't.

Local is only local if RR isn't routing you to Kansas as the first hop like they did for me a year ago!  I've got business class now, but I was really mad at them when they moved me there a while back.   :bang:

BTW:  A fast "local" test does not tell you if RR isn't sending you through a slow port when you go for a real speed test like getting a big image from who knows where.  It will tell you if they routed you through tim-buck-too and back though.

I've been sulking in the background because on most internet test sites I could only get about 1.4 – 1.5 mbps.  After the upgrade I could only get about 2.5 from speedtest.wi.rr.com.  I complained and told them I was sure the problem was with the homeconnect modem I had.  I've never been happy with it.  Anyway, after working with them, I got up to  2.9 from rr and they told me that those speeds were enough and that there was little else they could do.  I still only got 1.5 from Mcafee.

Anyway, Last Week I got a letter in the mail telling me that I needed to exchange my modem.  I did and got a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem.  I can now get what everyone else has been getting:

Preparing Speedtest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Done
running 10s outbound test (upload) . . . . . 375.82Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (download) . . . . . . 4.89Mb/s

Your speed is 88.93 times faster than 56Kb dialup
