OK...another question, probably best fit for Mr. Hall.  I see Ch 6's digital assignment is ch. 33, ch. 12's is ch 34.  Also Ch.24's digital assignment is ch. 25.  How can these channels be so close together without causing interference?  Esp. ch 24's signal, wouldnt it cause interference to their analog signal, or is it being broadcast in an entirly different way?

Dan Burgess

Here in Chicago, we have some interesting channel assignments.  These are the ten DTV stations currently broadcasting:

WPWR analog 50, digital 51
WGN analog 9, digital 19
WLS analog 7, digital 52
WCPX analog 38, digital 43
WSNS analog 44, digital 45
WTTW analog 11, digital 47
WFLD analog 32, digital 31
WMAQ analog 5, digital 29
WJYS analog 62, digital 36
and the goofiest of all...
WBBM analog 2, digital 3

So we have broadcasts on 43, 44, 45, 47, 50, 51, and 52.  (When they sign on, WGBO-DT will be on 53.)  Also, South Bend has WNDU-DT 42 and Milwaukee has WDJT-DT 46, as well as a DTV 48 in Champaign and a DTV 54 in Rockford, which are both at very low power (à la WITI-DT) at the moment.

With all this going on, I have not observed any problems.  I get all the Chicago UHF DTV stations pegged at 100 from ~20 miles away, and the analogs (namely 44 and 50 in the crowded area) look quite good.  Each channel seems to be staying in its specified bandwidth, and I haven't noticed any analog/digital interference on neighboring channels.  (It's a pleasant surprise to report this.)

I also noticed, as I was spinning the rotor to attempt some long-shot reception, that Kalamazoo also has an IND station on channel 45.

As the crow flies, Chicago and Kalamazoo are only about 80 mi. apart.  I would think that would lend itself to reception problems for those people in between, like in St. Joseph MI.
