if the HDTIVO's modem is caller ID capable, why didn't they just include that feature to begin with?  Does it mess something else up?

borghe

because not all TiVo's ever released (even series 2 units) have callerid capable modems. The modem actually has changed quite a few times in the TiVo and the init string changes or the unit just doesn't support CID.

though the number of reported units to not have callerid seems to be very small...

I do consider myself computer literate... and I didn't understand I darn thing you said

for explicit instructions

if you are comfortable with building a computer and using a command line (DOS/Linux) this is a piece of cake.

anyone interested in doing this will need to make one tiny change from those instructions though. Most likely you do not have the kernel from the original 3.1.5 software version anymore. If you PM me I can provide you with a copy of the original unaltered kernel and directions on how to hack it (both the kernel and instructions are completely legal). You then would skip the "/floppy/killhdinitrd /dev/hdc6" command and would instead follow the instructions that I would provide to you.

I've read through the information.. and come to the conclusion that my definition of computer literate is much different than what I looked at....

But I'm happy with the HD Tivo, and I'm not going to try something like that, when I'd just screw it up..

I can live without caller ID (it would be nice to have)..

But I sure wish channel 58 would map correctly......

heh.. the second thread I am posting this in...

mhz40 reported in the recording forum that WDJT is planning on changing their PSIP mapping and guide on 1/31 to conform with FCC mandate. Hopefully at that time this issue will be resolved once and for all.
