Anybody know when TW is going to upgrade the RR speed from 3Mbps to 5Mbps in the Milwaukee area?

jimbop99

Rumor is, by the the end of January.

sp44again

Suppose to happen this week.

jkane

So that means next week when people can get more bandwidth, it'll actually slow down due to more use.

They are also calling subscribers of Earthlink cable to switch. The deal is: first month free, next 6 at $30, then a year at $34. After that back to normal price.

Really? I didn't get that call yet.

That sounds like a nice offer.  I hope they call me.

I'm thinking if I call them they'll say "huh, never heard of that".

When I first moved to my house, I was getting close to 6Mb downloads. I attributed that to two things. First, I was probably the only one with a computer within a mile of me and second, I can look out my window and see TW's central station. Over the last five years or so, it has slowed down terribly, to the point now where I'm lucky if I can get 1Mb speeds.

Looking at the config on my Motorola cable modem, I can see that they have placed a cap on the speeds. I did upload a new config and got better speeds, but TW's server's sent down their config again and messed it up.

I feel kind of ripped off. They provided good service, then stripped my service, now they want me to buy the premium service at $84.95/month just to put me back where I was originally? If I could find a way to lock my modem's config so TW couldn't slow it down again, I'd be happy.

I don't want to raise the ire of anyone, but it can apparently be done, it requires you to install non-approved firmware, though.  (Not that I nor anyone I know would ever do such a thing, but I read about it on the Net)

Yeah, I've read that but I'm not ready to solder wires onto my modem yet.

It will all be moot soon anyway.  In spring I'm going to cut down the big tree that blocks me from seeing my office.  10Mb up and down for the cost of the wireless hardware and encryption cards is a much better deal since I usually only upload/download from work to home anyway.

- Speeds always were 'capped'.
- The 'cap' has never been lowered --- it just keeps going up.
- Unless you are paying for premium service, speeds were never set at 6 mb/s.
- If you are having problems, call for a service call and have it fixed for free.
- You can not upload a new config.  They are downloaded.  (Unless you are trying to hack your modem...in which case you are getting more than you are paying for.)
- Unlike DSL, distance has 0 bearing on speeds in the cable modem world.

Call this Time Warner number (414-687-9387) and ask for Dave. Then ask about a special offer to get RR.

They weren't capped until '97 or '98. Uncapped to capped is a reduction.

Tried that. They don't fix "doesn't work as well as it used to" problems

I was a beta tester for TW's cable modem back in '94-95. I know how the configs work and how the architecture works. As a network architect, I also understand how the infrastructure works. On diagrams, there is no distance related factors affecting speed, but in the physical world with packet collisions, trunk saturation, and daily equipment malfunctions, distance is an issue.

I hope this doesn't sound offensive to anyone, I just haven't had my coffee yet. I can be a grump in the morning. I'm going to go have my coffee now :D
