Just when it looked like Comcast had the DVR business figured out, TiVo stepped in with a deal that San Francisco customers of the cable operator couldn't do without.

Late last week, TiVo employees gave away about 2,000 DVRs and collected more than 2,000 donated items from Comcast cable subscribers, CNet reported. Apparently, Comcast's DVR service, featuring Motorola boxes, wasn't ready for prime time or the operator ran out of digital recorders for its customers, the online service said.

Comcast customers who were first-time TiVo owners and brought their cable bill and a donation to TiVo's corporate headquarters were eligible for the promotion, CNet said.
