I just got a HDTV and I have TWC, but they are having problems. with the  cable box locking up. They have put in 3 boxes already, and it still locks up. Would a dish work better?

Andrew Grall

It is certainly an option, especially if TW can't get it working correctly for you.

If they have sent out three boxes, then it's not the box. It must be your cable service. I would keep on them until they get it right.

Have them send out their more experienced guy that can actually diagnose your service. Not the flunky that can only switch out a box. It could be the service in your area. It could just be the service coming up to your home. It could be the cables in your home. It could be bad connectors in your home. They may need to put on a booster. Lot's of possibilities. HD cable service is a lot more touchy about bad cable and connections than analog.

I have TWC and it works just fine. Don't give up just yet.

TW finally admitted they have a software problem with there box.
They are putting in a cable card.

That does not make since. Why would they only have a software problem at your house? Nobody else seems to have the issue.

The problem you're going to have with a cable card over the box is no two way communication. No pay per view. No on-demand and no DVR if you should choose to have that.

Someday cable cards my have those features, but not today.

I think they are still trying to take the easy way out. Using this rather than switching the box out a fourth time. Don't let them sell you a song and dance. They need to make their box work.

I would also move to the DVR if I were you. It's the best thing going in digital television. It's also dirt cheap. Only $6 more per month for HD DVR. Once you have it, you won't know how you ever lived without.

They are putting a card in until they can fix the software problem.
Flanner TV was over at my house at the same time TW was and there is no question it is a software problem on there box.
I would sooner not have ppv and on demand and be able to watch Hd without the box locking up and having to unplug the box and reboot. Besides both TW and Flanner said the analog picture would be better with the card.

If you had mentioned 'DVR' in your original post, or had searched this site; you may have discovered there were intermittent issues with the HD-DVR's surrounding video and audio issues.  New code was downloaded a few days ago to resolve the problems, although the jury is still out on its effectiveness (IMO).
If the problem does exist in the outdoor wiring, you will have the same problem with the cablecard/tv tuner solution.
FYI- If your TV needs to be swapped in the future for some reason, you can not simply move the cable card from TV A to TV B.  You will need to contact TWC, even if its the same make & model.
Hope your issue is resolved soon...

TWC or Dish?

My answer - VOOM!
Voom OTA delivers even WITI fox 6!
Nobody has more HD at the moment.
DirecTV just intend to add HD later.
Dish is very quiet.
TWc doesn't even have ch. 18, and ch 24.
I am very happy with Voom.

I can tell you about its effectiveness...nothing!:(

Recording HDNET and NBC at the same time in HD provided me with dropouts, pixelation and so on...I sure hope TWC didn't PAY for this last "enhancement".

Cable card installed, works great. No locking up on HD stations.
Analog stations are a lot better and pip works better.
