Audio problems with Monday night's LAX

Obviously like most here I was watching the Packers game but I DVR'd LAX.  When playing it back the 4-1 OTA broadcast had big audio problems.  For the first 12 minutes or so there was no center speaker output thus taking away all of the main talking.  All you could hear was background noise coming from the surrounds.  Then 5.1 kicked in and disappeared again a few minutes later.  Finally for the second half of the show 5.1 was steady.  Did anyone else notice this?  I remember similar problems with the live broadcast of Hawaii last Monday night.  This sucks.  Please tell me it isn't my DVR. ;)

EDIT:  Nevermind, someone in Ohio posted at AVS that they experienced the same thing.  Phew! :)

This was a new problem.

Our Dolby audio encoder is controlled by the metadata sent by NBC.

NBC sent the actual show with Dolby 5.1 audio.. but the NBC metadata told the encoder NBC was just sending 2 channel Dolby Digital.

The encoder did what it was told to do.

We called NBC in New York but they seemed to be clueless.

We figured out the problem and then manually set the encoder to do Dolby 5.1

Thanks for your reply.  I hope that if this problem occurs again it'll be fixed much quicker now that your station is aware of it.  Like I said, I had similar problems with the premeire of Hawaii.  Now that's a great show BTW. :)

I think you have mentioned this in the past too.  With those comments and the Olympic HD fiasco, I have to wonder if NBC would be better off with a whole new HD staff.

Thanks for the ongoing open communication between your station and our forum.

Yesterday I posted problems with 504 and nobody understood me and now you mention it...
NBC has to get its "act together" with 5.1 or go back to 2.0 and be done with it, or was the Universal acquistion too much for them? Other locations around the country reported same.

If you look at my thread as I had the very same problems, though summerfun did says he did not...
maybe he disliked the show so much he didn't notice.

Gparris,

I think we have uncovered our mutual miss understanding. I did not see the first 12 minutes of the show. I forgot it was on and did not start the DVR until about 15 minuets after the hour. It appears that the issues were early during the show according to the previous post.

Glad to know were not both going crazy.

Thank you for clarifying...

As for NBC and DD5.1 : What a joke!

Maybe they should hire the ABC's network personnel that have been doing DD5.1 for some time, now....it works good!

Your thread was titled "Channel 504 problems."  I don't have TWC so that tidbit of info didn't mean anything to me.  Without reading the thread I had no way of knowing that was TWC's FOX-HD.  I wish I had known your thread was about LAX as I would certainly have read it earlier.  I was not ignoring your complaint intentionally.  Just want to clarify this so that there's no hard feelings.

I thought OTA folks always fare better than cable folks, so I assumed (incorrectly, of course) that the cable or cable feed was in error from the station.

Channel 504 is NBC-HD, not FOX-HD...just for your information, on TWC cable.:D

Anyway, Heather was older-looking in HD and the analogue channel made her look better
(and I could at least seem lips move and hear something)....

Thanks for the message...720p!

NBC: Get this message:

Fix your DD5.1 feeds once and for all!:D

Whoops, yeah I meant NBC.  Funny how Fox-HD seems to be off to a good start (OTA anyway) while NBC has had HD for quite awhile now and is the one with the problems.  I too was quite frustrated with the lack of audio for LAX and Hawaii.  It's really sad that these were the premeire episodes that had the problem.  The whole idea is to get you hooked on the show, not mad at the network.
