Intel said it has postponed its planned end-of-year introduction of liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) microdisplay chips for video-projection displays, according to published reports.

The company said the decision was made to make picture quality improvements and was not caused by technical problems. A new introduction date was not announced by the company.

Intel announced at the start of the year that it would begin the production of LCoS chips to address the rapidly growing market for microdisplay-based rear-projection televisions. To date, that area has been dominated by Texas Instruments, which produces Digital Micromirror Devices (DMDs) for Digital Light Projection (DLP) systems, and by various manufacturers of tiny LCD chips used in microdisplay-projection television products.

It sounds like they were developing a 720p product and have switched to a higher resolution.  Probably 1080p.

They should just buy Spatialight and use their 10 bit 1080p LCoS technology.

This is disappointing as a consumer and an investor.  I hope Intel gets their act together on this soon.
