SAN FRANCISCO — Intel said it has postponed its planned end-of-year introduction of liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) microdisplay chips for video-projection displays, according to published reports.

The company said the decision was made to make picture quality improvements and was not caused by technical problems. A new introduction date was not announced by the company.

Intel announced at the start of the year that it would begin the production of LCoS chips to address the rapidly growing market for microdisplay-based rear-projection televisions. To date, that area has been dominated by Texas Instruments, which produces Digital Micromirror Devices (DMDs) for Digital Light Projection (DLP) systems, and by various manufacturers of tiny LCD chips used in microdisplay-projection television products.
