SCI-FI in HD on DTV

I meant to post this earlier, Sunday evening about 4-5pm I stopped on the Sci-Fi channel while surfing thru DirecTV channels. Instead of being Fullscreen (the setting I use for 4:3 ratio on my Toshiba) the Sci-Fi channel was 4:3 with bars on the sides.

I tried to change the aspect ratio and was amazed that I couldn't. This only happens on my Toshiba if the source is HD. I imagine this is because of the DVI input.

So I look and the LG box read 1080i. The picture wasn't that great so it had to be an upconverted signal. Some Johnny Depp movie was on. Due to events out of my control I couldn't sit there and watch long and a few hours later when I tried again it was no longer in HD. DTV must be testing this or something, definitely something to keep an eye on.
