LG Electronics' high-end technology geared toward enhancing the efficiency of next-generation digital TV transmission has been adopted as the standard of the United States.

The firm said Wednesday its technology called EVSB, which was co-developed with its U.S. affiliate Zenith, was approved as the standard of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC).

The technology will enable high-definition digital broadcasting in shadow areas where the reception signals are as weak as a quarter of average signals.

The ATSC, which was founded in 2000 to enhance broadcasting quality in the U.S., created a subcommittee to discuss the standard of digital TV.

Korea's digital TV transmission format, which was recently finalized after years of disputes, was also based on the ATSC standard.

LG looks to introduce chips based on the EVSB technology by the end of 2005, while mass production is expected at the next year.

``By retaining digital TV's source technologies, we will be able to firmly preempt the stiff global race in the emerging field,'' LG's chief technology officer Paik Woo-hyun said.

Paik added LG would pull out all the stops in developing digital TV-related technologies, so the merchandise can follow in the footsteps of the nation's flagship items such as semiconductors and cell phones.
