Hi -

Here are my signal results using a HR10-250, CM 3678 V/U/FM antenna and a CM 7778 preamp. Antenna is in the attic of a two story home.

Freq             CH               Signal
8                  10-1               41
22                30-1               67
25                24-1               75
28                 4-1                95
33                 6-1                68
34                12-1               92
35                36-1               92
40                55-1               92
46                  1-1               77
61                 18-1              79

These reading came from the HR10-250 signal strength meter. E

Why is CBS58 digital on CH 1-1 instead of 58-1?

Are my results similiar to what others are getting at a similiar distance from the tower? Can I do something to increase reception other than an outside antenna or is the saying regarding digital "either you get or you don't" applicable here.

Thanx,

Rick

I suggest you use the search function on these forums and you will find a ton of information about the question about the redirect of 58 to 1....there really is not definitive answer, just subjective ones, which I think is also the reason they chose 1.1...it was all subjective.

Signal strength readings are only good comparisons when comparing the same receiver to yours.  Also with the low/high power situation it is sometimes better for channel 6 viewers to be far away and to the west at the present...due to adjacent channel interference and antenna patterns.

So Greg does that mean that my signal will degrade when things get changed/adjusted at WITI? I hope not!!

BTW, I am now using only the CM 4228 with a CM 7778 preamp. I am now getting all digitals and FM believe it or not, just fine. I have since disconnected the CM 3678.

Time to go take a shower and have a cool one.

ok, here is a little info on 46-1, 1-1, DirecTV, and the HR10-250.. Warning for the faint of heart.. not all of it is good.

58 broadcasts on channel 46. This is then remapped in their PSIP data to 1-1 through 1-3. However, DirecTV refuses to play ball with Weigel Communications and has forcibly mapped 46-1 through 46-5 to 58-1 through 58-5. Furthermore, they provide all guide data from TMS for 58-1 and 58-2 also (as does TMS (Tribune Media Services) in general).

Now for the bad news. There is a bug in the HD Tivo that affects some stations. WDJT's broadcast on 46 is one of them. Namely, the Tivo shifts all of the subchannels up one channel. So instead of the Tivo seeing channels on 46-1 through 46-3 it sees them on 46-2 through 46-4. The problem is that the guide data and hard remappings from DirecTV still occur on 58-1 through 58-3 and point to 46-1 through 46-3. This means that even though the guide data for 58-2 is correct, when you actually tune to it on your Tivo you will get CBS58 instead of WMLW. (Nothing is one 58-1.. you just getting a searching for signal).

The best you can do is call DirecTV and let them know and demand it gets fixed.. This has been done for a while now (since release) but as of yet D* hasn't released ANY patches for the Tivo. The channels are still viewable and still able to be recorded from with a manual recording, but the guide data will always be wrong and you can't record from the guide or program listings.

Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have had my Tivo since the beginning of May. The 58 bug is the only complaint I have with it.. Once that is fixed the system will be perfect as far as I am concerned... I have it upgraded to 63 hours of HD recording space.

Did you go with the Weeknees upgrade or someone else's?
I have read that when the Hard Drives are upgraded, the guide refresh slows down considerably. Have you experienced this?

Here are my signal results from Dousman using a HR10-250, Winegard PR-9032 UHF & Winegard AP4700 preamp (19dB gain)
for VHF I use a Winegard CA-5254 and a 15db amp.

the antennas are mounted on the rooftoop.

Freq CH Signal
8 10-1 80
22 30-1 23
25 24-1 80
28 4-1 92
33 6-1 17
34 12-1 92
35 36-1 92
40 55-1 92
46 1-1 65
61 18-1 22

I have problems with the lower powered stations from Milwaukee.  They don't have anything for me to watch (upn & wb) so I don't mind. I could probably tweak them in better but its never good enough for viewing.  I can also get better results when removing the uhf/vhf combiner for the two antennas.
I leave the antenna pointed towards madison since  CBS is very stable for me.  most of my network/off air HD viewing is CBS.  I have the HR10-250 is configured for milwaukee locals from DirecTV and madison digitals off air.  Its worked out well so far.

also remember that (unfortunately) with the HR10-250 you will get lower signal strengths than you would from a normal HD receiver.. This is because the signal is split internally.. As a test you can crack it open and connect the antenna to just a single tuner and get a better idea on what kind of signal you are getting.. you can also possibly look at replacing the splitter with a high quality one. It is just screwed into the chassis with both inputs sticking through cutouts in the case.

Some people have reported slightly better signal strengths going with a better splitter.

Rick Sass

Any recomendations on splitter?

borghe

I don't remember seeing anything listed and I haven't done it myself... so unfortunately no.. you can search the tivo boards for 'internal splitter' though and see what you come up with.

The other option is if you are diplexing the signal (like I am) you can diplex the signal off of each satellite cable and figure out a visually pleasing way to then run each split cable directly to the tuners. possibly through the ventilation holes on the bottom (though they might be too small).

of course if you don't care how it looks the easiest way is to just run the unit without the cover on and run the cables directly that way.

as for my upgrade.. I did it myself with a 250GB Maxtor drive I picked up for $140 I believe.. I have been using UNIX based systems all the way back to SYSVr4 and running Linux since Slackware 3 in '95.. Upgrading your drive if you know what you are doing takes about 10 minutes, and most of that time is removing the drive and putting it back in and getting your computer ready... it really is a piece of cake.. as for the guide refreshing slowly, my guide is pretty much the same speed as either of my series 1's (both at 120GB). The UI itself is still much quicker than the series 1 units... I can't really compare my unit to a stock unit as I upgraded it before I even turned it on...
