I just read some news that DirectTv sold its stake in Tivo....   I wonder if this is the beginning of the end.

no no no no no no no no no...

hopefully you got the picture there.. ;)

DirecTV has sold off its stake in Tivo.. it has ALSO sold off it's stake in Hughes Electronics. It has also sold off all manufacturing processes to Thompson... Starting to see a trend here?

DirecTV is in the process of liquidating all of its assets that are not part of its main operations (Selling multichannel TV service). This has nothing to do with DirecTV stomping over any existing relationships but is instead directly related to DirecTV trying to take more of a cable operator approach to things.. They just want to be responsible for the programming and transmission technology, let others worry about the hardware and receiver box side of things..

Nothing bad is meant by this and DirecTV even said in both press releases (Hughes and Tivo) that none of their relationships are changing, that this is just a leaner approach to their business of being a multichannel television provider...

True, but I find it hard to believe that somewhere in a dark corner at DTV there isn't some software developer coding away at DTV's own PVR service...

borghe

actually, that would completely go against what they are trying to do.. the point of this (and other actions) has been to get AWAY from that sort of thing... not only would I doubt it, but it would be entirely contrary to what they are attempting to do...

Ahh, I see what you are saying.  I hope you are right.  I would hate to have to part with my Tivo....
