CBS 58 Issue

Please excuse my low level of understanding, as I am very new to this forum, first post actually.

Here's my issue:  I just upgraded my D* system (thanks to the $99 offer I read about here- 3LNB Dish, New Model (360?)Samsung Box, Install, Off-air ant.-(Winegrad-If memory serves), free SHO-HD for 6 Mos., $2 HBO-HD for 6 mos. - Nice Deal!)

Anyway, I am able to clearly receive, 4-1, PBS, and 12-1.  I know that I will not be able to receive FOX6, but I fully assumed I'd be able to recieve CBS 58, however I am not getting it.  I read some of the other posts regarding the remapping issues.  However, when I enter 1-1 on my box it doesn't work, nor does 46 or 46-1.

Am I doing something wrong?  Is there something I could do to allow my box to recognize either of these channels (1-1 or 46)?  Could it be an antenna/reception issue which would require an amp of some type?  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Also, I live in Franklin - right near 27th and Ryan.

Also, since I am pretty new to this, could you dumb it down a bit for me.

Thanks.

Gregg Lengling

CH 58 digital is running low power but from you location you should be able to receive them.  I'm not familiar with the box you have but I would try to rescan the digital channels.  You menu guide should show either 1.1, 1.2 ect or 46.1, 46.2 ect.  If that doesn't work just try channel 46 and see if the box remaps to 1.1 where their PSIP sends you.

Anyone out there have the same box that can give some more detailed information????

Thanks Gregg.  The specific model of my box is Samsung SIR - TS360.  The installer told me that this is the best/newest  Samsung Box he's installed.

I will try to re-scan the digital channels.  Thanks.  Incidentally, the other channels' signals are pretty solid, I haven't had any problems at all.

Do amps/pre-amps end up being worth their cost.  Would you suggest something like this if the re-scan fails?   If so, what brand/model could you suggest for my location?

I wouldn't consider a preamp at your location, you should have a pretty good shot at the tower farm up on Capitol Drive.  The problem with preamps and lineamps are most people don't know how to set the gain for proper amplification without causing distortion or overload.  If you have a decent outdoor antenna that is the best scenario, and seeing as most stations are running ample power besides 58, I would aim for best signal on 58 as the others will be fine (especially from your location they are all within a few degrees of each other).

I have the same Samsung TR-360 HD box as of 3 weeks ago. Re map your digital channels and they should appear as 58-1 - 58-5. My box does not map as 1.1  Hope this helps. So far this box has worked very well!

BigShooter

I attempted to rescan for 58-1 thru 58-5, but still was not able to get CBS.

Jf3233, by "remap", what exactly do you mean?  Perhaps I am confused about the difference between rescanning and remapping.  How would I remap the channel?

I am going to try to manually adjust my rooftop antenna, but I fear I will screw up the NBC and ABC OTA signal by doing so.  I can't help but think I should be able to get all of them, as I am 15ish miles away from all, and they're all roughly the same direction (within a few degrees, per GreggL).

Does the fact that my OTA antenna is affixed to my dish and as such, actually facing back at my roof, matter?  Meaning that since I live in Franklin most of my OTA signals are north, and since my dish must point SW, it is mounted on the South side of my house and hence the OTA antenna is facing the roof.  Make any sense? Does it matter?

Should I adjust the OTA to point higher, or toward the sky rather than the roof (if it's even possible to tip it up a few degrees) to have a better chance?  At this point I'm willing to try most anything, as the NFL season is only 4 short months away.

Sorry for the confusion. By remap I mean rescan your digital stations in your antenna options in your box menu. Sounds like you have done this already. If you rescan for your digital stations with this box it will automatically map 58 OTA to what  I said before 58-1 etc. My box will not let me enter stations manually on the remote if they have not been picked up by the box after scanning. In other words if you scan for your digital OTA stations and the box does not pick them up (as a result of your antenna placement possibly) you would not be able to tune to 58 manually. As far as antenna placement goes I am in Milw and use a weingard not attached to the dish. My antenna is the one that looks like the bat plane. Works well for me but I am only 2-5 miles from any of the major towers. I still do not get 18 and 6. If your box continues to not pick up 58 after scanning I would assume it has to be antenna placement. Others on this forum probably know better about that issue. I can tell you how I dialed my antenna in. Got the degree placements of all major towers from antenna webb. I subtracted the difference between the highest degree and lowest (77-53=24 ) then split the difference (12) and pointed the antenna to 65 using a compass. This has worked for me. My antenna is mounted on a upper porch railing about 20 feet off the ground only. Hope this helps.

Thanks JF.   I will definitely try the compass idea.  If anyone else has suggstions, I would welcome them.
