Wind problems?

I have a attic mounted antenna and pick up all of the channels fine.

Except CBS (58-1 on my box)
The problem I have is when it is windy such as tonight (sat) I get a signal strength between 0-36 (bounces all over with it usually not being watchable) while on calmer days it stays between 45-60 and is fine.  This is only on CBS

So is this just a wind issue or do I need my attic mounted antenna adjusted to recieve that signal better?   I don't recall this being a problem before but It could be i didn't watch cbs when it was windy. Ie:  I never noticed it during the football season in fall but today and last sunday (very windy that day too)  I couldn't watch the NCAA's in HD.

All of the others stations such as NBC, ABC, PBS etc all come in at 100% OTA.  I did notice ABC dropped to 93% tonight.

BTW- I live in the SW side of Waukesha

Thanks,

Steve

If it was on the roof, I'd say yes.  Loose fittings & elements could cause this (but usually affecting more than one channel)... but being protected I think it's just a coincidence.

I've had the same issues with WDJT's digital signal on windy days too.  I have a Winegard Square shooter antenna installed outside on my rooftop.  Watching the NCAA Final 4 games on Saturday were very annoying.  The signals kept on dropping in and out.  I'm also curious to know if this is something that is expected on windy days (possibly even rainy and snowy days) or I need to make changes to my setup?  Perhaps some of the other more seasoned OTA HD antenna owners can offer some help or suggestions.  And all my connections and cabling are fine.  I check them on a regular basis.  The analog WDJT 58 channel reception is fine during this entire time.   Also, my other local channels are not effected by the wind either.    Can someone else please advise?

If you are working with a marginal signal or receiving a multipath signal this is to be expected.  The movement of trees and other objects change the reflections of the signal.  They can create additional multipath or remove the multipath signal you are receiving.  It's typically an indication that you don't have a clear shot at the signal source.

I do have a clear shot.  I have a 2 story house and the house next to me is a ranch with no trees or anything obstructing the path of the signal.

Then the attenuation through part of your roof is allowing you to get a stronger signal from a multipath (reflection) and this comes and goes in the wind.  This is part of the problem of running low power on a Television station.  It'll be nice some day when WDJT-DT goes High Power instead of the power level they are running now.

THINGS WERE SO WINDY BY ME, THAT MY SINGLE POLE MOUNT DID NOT HOLD UP, IT BENT OVER ONTO THE ROOF.  BENT THE
@$#% OUT OF SOME OF THE ELEMENTS ON MY ANTENNA.  FUNNY THING THOUGH.  I TOOK EVERYTHING DOWN. MODIFIED MY PHILIPS MANT900 ANTENNA BY CUTTING IT IN HALF JUST IN FRONT OF THE U-CLAMP.  BASICALLY GETTING RID OF MOST OF THE VHF ELEMENTS.  NOW I PUT IT BACK UP AT THE SAME HEIGHT AND AM RECEIVING ALL CHANNELS AT THE SAME SIGNAL STRENGTH AS BEFORE, EXCEPT FOX 47(dt11) WHICH IS VHF, AND WITH THAT I ONLY LOST ONE BAR OF SIGNAL STRENGTH?  NOW MY ANTENNA IS HALF THE SIZE AND MORE RESISTANT TO STRONG WINDS!

Crumb,

What area do you live in?

Smack,

I live in southwest corner of Milwaukee by the Southridge Best Buy.  Why?

I have a similar problem with CBS very often.  Lastnight when the games were on I had 73% strenth on CBS and I has getting loss of picture and sound?  All of my locals off air are 95% - 100% for what ever reason CBS goes between 30% - 85%.  Weather doesn't seem to play a factor for me.  Some days the picture is great but the sound is clipping.

I have a set-top antenna.

I had something similar to this a while ago (but after my rooftop was installed).

Normally my signals peg at 100 on everything except for 46 which is 89-100 and 33 which is 0. A few weeks ago IIRC 28 dropped to the mid 50's, 34 and 46 were in the low 70's, and 35 was in the 40's (or something like that). I was worried because I was hoping my antenna didn't move or have any fittings loosened.. but I didn't worry about it (and actually got a good solid signal on everything, even 35).

Anyway, the next day I checked it and everything was back up to pegged 100's...

except for 33.. grrrr

crumb,

I was just curious if you were out near me or further west.  I thought that it might be the signal doesn't make it out this far.

I live in Port.  Way north of MKE.  Might be the reason?

The easy answer would be for CBS to go full power like ABC & NBC.

Maybe if Jim Hall happens to read this he would be kind enough to give us an answer or some type of timeline for CBS going full power or if it is in the plans to do it.

I don't think I would want to fork out the extra money to get it on TWC as I already spend a fortune with my D* packages.  Plus D* should be getting the east coast fox feed in the near future.

But......If I won't be able to get a reliable signal by football season I may have to reconsider.

Thanks,
