Does anyone with Direct TV know if we can get the Discovery HD station? I've seen the schedule of programs at  the HDTV Galaxy web-site, and it looks promising.

No the only place you can get it right now is on Dish Network, and Dish has been advertising that fact.  Anytime I email Directv about this I get the normal response that they don't respond until they have a delivery date as an announcement.  And I would think that everything there is a little slower now that their future is up in the air and don't know if Dish can buy them or if they'll end up trashed by another buyer.

So, does Dish have some sort of exclusive rights to DiscoveryHD?

Is there any word TWC will pick it up?... I suppose I should wait until they at least bring CBS up on HD first, eh?

TWC seems to have problems for some reason...  Recent problems with dropouts and sound are driving me nuts.

Unless CBS makes it to cable by Christmas I'm gonna be looking at a STB and Dish or DirecTV. Then of course my cable goes byebye and since my roadrunner will go up in price w/o cable DSL may also be in the future.

So... listen up TWC that's about $130 per month you'll lose from me alone.

Discovery HD is also availible via C band dish on the 4dtv system.

Mike,

I don't know about DirecTV but with the Dish HD receiver 6000 you don't need an extra STB box. It handles OTA signals perfectly.

I always wondered what the cost of a BUD was.  Do you have any idea?  I mean you have to buy the giant dish, then some sort of receiver, do you have to pay for programming?  Or is it finders keepers?  They just don't advertise that way to get signals, so it got me thinking it might be a black market free for all situation.  It's just a guess, and if you know the answer, I would be curious to hear it.

hope this helps. Unfortunatelly nothing is free in this world. I think these are the options for the monster Dish

C band programming is generally cheaper than Directv or Dish, but the start up costs are higher. Figure about 1K for the most basic of systems plus installation of a truly big dish. Lots of freebies via c band though. Not a good option unless your suburban or rural.
