I think this is not a pro. This is the main reason AGAINST the DVI cable. You have no choice as to the output of your cable box. The DVI cable will send the native signal to the TV whether you want it to or not. With the component cables, you get to choose what you want sent to the TV. I personally send everything at 1080i. You could send native if you want or some combination. You loose that option with DVI.

Didn't you find a tweak to remedy this?

Nope...

If you use the DVI cable, the native signal will always go to the TV and you have no control. If you use the component cables, you can control what the converter box sends to the TV.

I figure it is not a big deal, becasue I am switching to the DVR HD box soon and this will become a non issue.

Doh, did a search and it was someone else-

Finally, after a month and a half of working with Time Warner, a manager there found a secret menu for me. To get HD out of the DVI output you have to follow these steps, in order!

1. Hookup a component cable to the TV and STB.
2. Do NOT hookup the DVI cable yet.
3. On the front of the Pioneer STB, hold in the button with the diamond shape icon, tap the (-)volume button once.
4. A menu will pop up on the bottom of the screen, with 720 and 1080. Pick one.
5. Now, attach the DVI cable.
6. Unattach the component cable.
7. You will not be able to get back into the hidden menu, unless you go through the steps again.
8. The signal will now pass directly through to the TV in the resolution it was sent in."

Guess it's not what I thought it was.

Now I'm confused. I don't understand your post. I can get HD out of my DVI cable and out of my component cables. I don't have to do anything special.

Your statments seem to contradict each other.

1. Your statment that this is required to get HD out of the box. I already get HD through the DVI cable from the box without any special steps.

2. Step 4 seems to say that I have a choice of what the box will send rather than just the native signal when using the DVI cable.

3. Step 8 seems to contradict step 4 by saying everything will now pass directly through to the TV in the resolution it was sent in.

I have found, when using the DVI cable, you loose control of the menu that lets you choose what output you would like (ie 480i/p, 720p or 1080i). The DVI will always go native straight to the TV. If you use the component cable, a menu in the STB allows you to choose your output to the TV.

Maybe the steps above will make the DVI cable always output 720p or 1080i as directed in step 4. But that would make step 8 incorrect.

I like to choose, so I use the component cables. I upconvert everything to 1080i, so I don't get screen flicker when changing channels. The PQ looks great on all channels. Using native signals or a DVI cable does not improve PQ one bit.
