Newbie here.  I just got digital cable with TW.  I have a Sony 36" non digital tv, its about 3-4 years old.  I know I cant get a digital picture, but can i get digital sound.  I have an onkyo 5.1 reciever, so I can watch dvd's in digital 5.1.  Right now when watching movies on Cable, I just use video 2 on the reciever and use Pro Logic 2 for 5.1 simulation.  Or All channel stereo for music.  Im not sure on the connections that need to be made to get this done.  Right now Its cable in to the box,out to tv.  video 2 on reciever out to tv, using the cheap little red, white and yellow connectors.

Thanks
Mike

Take another one of those cheap cables and connect it from the 'digital audio' out of the set top into the 'digial audio' in of your Onkyo.  Then select the proper input on the Onkyo an viola... 5.1 audio (when available).  You may have to move the set top's video to match-up the with whatever the digital audio input corelates to on the Onkyo.  In my case, it's video 1.
The SA set top only puts out digital audio when tuned to digital channels.  The Pioneer version does a conversion, so it outputs a digital audio signal even when tuned to analog channels (2-99).  If you have the SA, plug the L & R audio of the set top into the L & R inputs on the Onkyo that match up with the digital input (again, in my case video 1).  The receiver should default to the plain L & R when it does not detect the digital audio signal.  Now you can leave the sound of your TV set behind for good, unless you want to use it's internal tuner.

Two comments:
  • Since you have a non-digital TV, you probably didn't get a HD digital cable box. I don't know whether the SD boxes have digital audio out, and if they only work on the digital channels. But MHz40 should know (I believe he works for TWC)
  • If your set is 3-4 years old as stated, it probably has an s-video jack. You'll get much better quality video with an s-video cable than you will with composite video (the yellow jack you are currently using)

My SD digital cable box has a digital audio out. And yes, it only works with digital (100+) channels.

It's a Pioneer Voyager unit.
