You know I really don't watch too much local TV but yesterday I found myself watching The Masters and a movie last night on 1.1 (CBSHD).  Don't know what all the noise about popping is...as I had perfect picture and sound through my entire experience.

It comes and goes. Most of the time it is perfect. Every once and awhile it starts popping. I usually call them and they drop out of HD mode until they get it fixed, then they come back on line.

Watching the Masters right now, and it's popping...

Been watching all afternoon..no popping here, but for a minute or so it was a little choppy...but hard to tell if it was them or me.

Time to get the hearing checked. :D Just flipped back from the Sox game on INHD to watch the putt and it was obvious.

Perhaps the Brewers complete lack of local broadcasts this year will mean no blackouts.

Just watched the last hole. WOW what a fantastic finish.

There was a combination of two audio problems. One was the popping which I really believe is local here to ch 58 because they have this problem all the time.

The other was the audio level of the background noise, clapping and cheering. I think there was an auto level feature of the equipment that attempts to keep the background noise level constant. As the crowd noise level increased and decreased, the audio level was clipping at the max amount before the equipment toned it down. This gave an effect of bad audio.

This is probable a bi product of trying to produce in 5.1 instead of a simple stereo signal. It is going to take these guys a few more live broadcast and a second generation of equipmnet to work out all the bugs.

I heard the popping too.  I called the station and they said they would tell "master control" to fix the problem.  It wasn't fixed.  I find the popping audio to be extremely annoying.

I agree the background noise would chop when all else was quiet and that probably was due to some ALC (automatic limiting control) on the audio processing.  But my hearing is fine and I have had ZERO popping here on my setup.  Maybe it's an encoding problem that some receivers are having a problem with.  I've got the Sony SAT200HD....anyone else out there with the same receiver having the problem?

I am using TWC but I have heard others using OTA and we all have the popping issue. This has been ongoing with ch58 for quite awhile. Most of the time it is ok, then I will be watching something like CSI and it will be popping so bad, you can't stand to watch the show, so I will switch and watch in SD.

When I call the night crew, they will check at their end and admit they are having a problem and drop out of HD. I don't think they would do that if they thought it was on my end.

The popping on the Masters was very minor compared to what it has been at some other times. Most of today's audio problem was the level balance I mentioned before.

Well I tried watching the Patriot tonight.  It goes without saying.   Instead I put in a DVD "The Deep"  that I just got from the $5.50 bin at Wally World in WB.  I do have to say though that I made it fifteen minutes into the movie without any JERKY video, although it sounded like Orvil was making popcorn for 6 bus loads of high school kids.  I got right to the point where Mel Gibson was trying out one of the chairs he had just made and it broke, then not only did I have poping audio but also JERKY video.  DVD time!:p :drink:

Ya know, I just had another thought.  One of 58's commercial sponsors might have advertised a product that I may have felt I needed to buy.  I guess I'll never know what that was.  As O'l Ben used to say "A penny saved.........".;)

Popping or chopping, whatever you want to call it, as far as I am concerned the Masters audio was horrible.  Something was wrong.

Something is still wrong. Sound on CBS has been bad for 2 weeks.

I agree. Last night's CSI-Miami was terrible, with choppy audio, etc. I even hooked up the old composite analog audio cables hoping that it was a digital problem but to no avail. It sounded just as choppy as with my digital coax.

Well here we are again. CBS 58 is popping again. I called and they said they would look into it.

Jim Hall,

Could you address this ongoing issue with us?
