More than half the UK's households now have digital television, according to a report today.

The free-to-air digital TV system Freeview was installed in nearly three million homes by the end of last year.

Media regulator Ofcom said there were now 12 million (12,357,753) digital television households or 50.2%.

This represents an increase of 423,000 households (2.2%) going digital from October to December.

According to Ofcom's quarterly report, 4% of households take analogue cable, meaning 54.4% of households subscribe to some form of multi-channel television.

Freeview uptake increased by 41% during the quarter – an increase of 866,500 households receiving the service.
