There is now a parliamentary majority for the building of a nationwide ground based digital distribution network for television.

Up to now, digital television in Norway has been distributed via cable or satellite.

In order to get access to the network, all must purchase a digital "black box" costing around NOK 1500 (USD 200).

This will give improved picture quality, even more channels to choose from, and access to more information from various sources.

The present analogue transmitters will be replaced by new digital equipment, and the analogue network will eventually be completely closed down.

The new network will be a joint venture between public broadcasster NRK and commercial channel TV 2, but programs from various channels will be available on the digital network.
