Are there any rules for advertisers being able to use the HDTV logo?

Now that HDTVs are commonly featured in weekly advertisements, I have noticed a lot of retailers (best buy, compusa, circuit city, etc) putting the logo next to TVs that I dont think should carry it.  A few weeks ago I saw an LCD TV that has something like 800x600 resolution featured as an "HDTV" set.  In the past I have seen such sets classified as "EDTV" but now they are claiming to be "HDTV".  So do sets only need to be able to receive HDTV signlals to be consitered an HDTV?  I think a lot of people are getting tricked into buying low res sets by simply catagorizing them all as "HDTV". And it could have a backlash on the migration to HDTV.

That said, I DONT have an HDTV set.  I have an HDTV tuner to receive the signal and a 1024x768 projector that gets pretty close to  HDTV resolutions.  But I made a concious choice to go to a lower resolution and save a lot of $$.  But lets face it 800x600 is not even close to HDTV.  And by calling it HDTV, I think a lot of people may be tricked into paying too much for something that wont put out the quality of picture the customer is expecting.

I bought an X-box game NFL Fever that had HDTV printed right on the back but it was 480p. I called Microsoft and a lady on the phone argued with me that 480p WAS HDTV.

Other Microsoft x-box games that really are HDTV will say (HDTV 720p) or (HDTV 1080i) but if it only says (HDTV) it is only 480p.

Buyer beware!!!!!

X-box ESPN NFL 2K4 has HDTV 720p printed right on the back of the game and they admit it was a printing error, that in fact it really is only 480p. It sure has not slowed them down with any of their advertising of the game as HD. Every website has it reviewed and advertised as a 720p game.

If you believe the misprint story, I have some land for sale.
