Top and Bottom Black Bars Uneven

I have a Toshiba 57" Cinema Series RPTV which is only a few months old. Lately I have noticed that whenever there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen they are not even. This happens while watching TV, VCR tapes and DVD's.
I contacted Toshiba and was told there is no user correction for this and to try unplugging the TV for 3 minutes. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Funny thing, I recorded a football game the other weekend on my 36' Toshiba Cinema Series tube TV, the score bar that runs across the top or bottom was even while watching but when I played the tape on the RPTV they were uneven.

You have a geometry problem with the guns and the service support was correct this is really not a user adjustable thing (however if you check out the AVS forums you'll find the codes and how to do it yourself..but it's not for the faint of heart).

I wonder does your set have an automatic convergence in the setup menu that you can run.  Most RPTV's do and this will usually cure the problem.  If not call the people you bought it from or the manufacturer and get it repaired under warranty.

I can not remember if it has an auto convergence or not, will check when I get home tonight. Where/What is the AVS Forum? I would like to read it and see if I am Faint of heart or not.

 Thanks for the reply!!!!!

All new Toshibas have an automatic convergence button.  It is labeled Touch Focus and can be found on the front panel near the volume, channel, and input selection buttons.

I also bought a 57" Toshiba, but only had it a month.  The last post is right, the touch Focus is on the front panel.  There is also a reset button you can try that clears up some other problems like locking up the HD tuner when the signal is weak like CBS and Fox are.

For more details on the Toshiba, someone pointed me to this site.  I haven't joined yet, but it has some great threads that talk about the 57H93 and 57H83.  They also allow you to download the 56 point convergance if you are so inclined after you become a member.  I have not found a need for that yet.  The picture is making me more than happy as it is now.  :)

You might want to try the 9 point convergance.  Press the menu button, and at the far right is a choice for Installation.  Pick that, and under one of the next set of menus is Convergence.  Once you select it, there will be a plus in the middle of the screen.  Follow the instructions on the screen to choose blue or red and move them with the arrows until they overlap the white in the middle with almost no red or blue peaking out from behind.  If some has to peak out, center it between the top and bottom / left and right evenly.  Then press exit (I think) and it will take you to a screen with 8 more of the pluses on the screen allowing you to adjust the rest of the picture one area at a time.

This may do nothing for your problem, but it's worth a try at least!  ;)

It sounds like the picture is not centered correctly.  This would not be solved with convergence IMO.  If you have a CRT computer monitor (not LCD) you should have controls to move the picture up and down on the screen and get it centered.  The RPTV should have similar controls.  If you move the picture, I think your black bar uneven situation will be solved, but you will probably open up a whole other can of worms.  I would think you might have to build a new grid for convergence and  to adjust geometry once the picture has been moved.  I'm not an expert, you should verify with an expert or have it done professionally.

My point is that I don't think adjusting convergence (automatic or not) will solve the problem for you.

Actually, a system-mode 64-point convergence can indeed correct minor geometry problems.  However, that requires adjustment for each point in the grid.  Hence, it's useful for straightening any horizontally scrolling text or the like.

However for centering, there are specific system-mode options.  I can't speak for the newer Tosh TVs, but my older Tosh uses HPOS and VPOS for centering.  I'd recommend the AVIA disk to verify the position. (Of course, if you're in that menu, you might as well set the overscan as well.)

Obviously, I don't recommend that you mess around in system mode unless you REALLY know what you're going.  If you botch things, it will void the warranty.

(I've had mine professionally calibrated, so I really don't mess with the settings other than 64-point convergence occationally.)

Home Theatre Spot is a very useful forum, although I don't spend much time there any more.  You might also find the following useful:

TV is fixed. Called service and they re-calibrated everything. Working just fine now!!!!
