We've been using digital microwave for about a year now for some local news remotes. And almost all our satellite truck remotes have been digital for several years. But it is still just standard definition video, even if it is sent via digital microwave or satellite. None of the available newsgathering equipment today is able to transmit HD, not even highly compress HD.
The input to the Strata microwave mentioned in the link to MRC is NTSC video.
The input to the MRC CodeRunner is NTSC..or you can add the optional SD digital video module, but it is still standard definition NTSC video.

Bandwidth is a problem for microwave. The present 17 MHz wide channels are going to be cut to 14.5 MHz by the FCC.

So how are you going to send HD from the field back to the stations to incorporate into your local HDTV newscasts?

It should be the equivalant to CBS58 HD signal.  That is about the same bandwidth they use for 1-1.  Problem here is the FCC has decided to sell off part of the 2Ghz spectrum that stations use for live trucks.  They are going to turn it into some type of Satellite uplink system. Stations like this band because it gives them distances of 40-50 miles.  If they have to go high in freq they will loose the ability make some of these shots.  So in some respects the FCC is screwing things up for broadcasters.
