Thanks to WTTW-Channel 11, the new year brings good news to the relative handful of Chicago viewers who have invested in high-definition television receivers.

Starting at 7 tonight, the public television station will launch the market's first 24-hour high-definition digital channel, featuring separate programming from its regular analog service on Channel 11.

Beginning with a 24-hour marathon of "Soundstage" concerts, WTTWDigital will include widescreen high-definition episodes of such popular PBS series as "Nova" and "Nature," as well as original local productions, such as "Chicago by L: Touring the Neighborhoods."

"We are pleased to be the first in Chicago to provide a high-definition program service," said Dan Schmidt, president and chief executive officer of parent company Window to the World Communications.

"From the time we became aware of the government mandate [to convert to digital transmission], our programming and engineering staff have been preparing for this day," he said. "As a result, they have been able to meet this challenge in creative and cost-efficient ways, including adapting previously acquired programming without having to incur additional costs."

WTTWDigital's complete program listings are available at: //www.wttw.com.

Milwaukee's WMVT-DT out did Chicago for the 24 hour a day HDTV programming?

WMVT-DT has been offering 24 hr/ 7 days per week HDTV programming since last summer.

According to latest info on Marketplace I believe Milwaukee has moved up to 31 from 33.
