Is the only way to see HD is by going to channels 504,505,506....?

I accidentally stumbled across them and saw a world of difference. Why such a big change from just 4,5,6..? Why doesnt HD broadcast on those??

Because the non-HDTV users need to have their feed for normal TV.  So they keep the analog on the "normal" channels.

So, if a game or a show is in wide/HD, I should tune to the 5XX channels?

Yes because the lower channels are all analog and they only pass the digital HD channels up in the 500 region for those with the HD boxes.
