What do these mean, and what should I use them for? I can find an explaination in the manual :(

Matt Heebner

1080i  is 1,080  lines interlaced. The picture on a TV is drawn in lines. Line number 1,3,5,7,9.....all the way  to 1079 is shown in field one, and 2,4,6,8...all the way to 1080 is shown in field 2.  the result is an interlaced picture.

540p is 540 lines progressive. Every line is drawn one after another.....1,2,3,4,5....to 540.

1080i and 540p are basically the same amount of resolution because with 1080i, you only have 540 lines on the screen at once (odd then even). Some say that progressive scanning (or the little 'p' after a number) is better for reducing motion blockiness in fast moving sports and action scenes.

Hope this helps. I am going to include a link to explainations to damn near everything Home Theater. Alot of interesting things and should a 'must read'.
