Gefen Inc., a manufacturer of supplemental solutions for HDTV (high-definition television), announced the release of its ex-tend-it DVI-1000 HD, a new addition to its HDTV ex-tend-it line that includes the 2x1 and the 4x1 HDTV Switchers.

The new DVI-1000 HD extender sends high-definition signals any length up to 1,640 feet (500 meters) from the source to the display using fiber optic cables. High-definition video is transmitted through sender and receiver units placed at the source and the extended display. DDC control signals are sent through separate Cat. 5 cables or are preprogrammed at the factory with predefined EDID settings. Both units run on a single 12-volt power supply, which can be plugged into either the sender or the receiver, offering flexibility in the system's setup.

Satellite set-top systems and DVD players that provide high-resolution digital video are compatible with the DVI-1000 HD as well as DVI-equipped high-definition displays and projectors that need to be extended beyond 15 feet, a distance limitation of the DVI signal. Without the proper extension system, high-resolution visuals break down noticeably when extended, sometimes not working at all.

The DVI-1000 HD is available to order from //www.gefen.com for $899. Gefen is offering extender kits that combine the DVI-1000 HD with pre-cut cable lengths, a convenient alternative to buying the unit and cables separately. Extension kits in 60 foot ($1,299), 100 foot ($1,378), 150 foot ($1,518) and 300 foot ($1,668) increments are available online or through one of Gefen's internationally-based dealers.
