DirecTV, Gemstar TV Guide Ink Deal

DirecTV and News Corp.-controlled Gemstar-TV Guide said they signed a licensing agreement that will allow the satellite TV service to utilize Gemstar's intellectual property and technology and the TV Guide brand in interactive program guides delivered across DirecTV's subscriber base.

The agreement provides DirecTV with a patent license allowing it to use Gemstar intellectual property and technology in its IPG or in alternative IPGs supplied by other vendors. Also under the agreement, Gemstar will receive fees from DirecTV rather than continuing to receive fees from DirecTV's set-top box suppliers.

In addition, during the first quarter, DirecTV will launch the TV Guide Channel on its "Total Choice" tier. TV Guide Channel combines program information and original content, offering a library of interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes access to shows.

Specific terms and conditions of the agreement were not disclosed.
