Tonite was the first game I ever watched on ESPN HD. I was surprised however that the audio was not in 5.1. from what I remember, most if not all of the Monday night games on ABC are in 5.1.

Was it just me, or does ESPN HD not carry the 5.1 signal?

No, we're lucky just to get real HD programming.

an audio guy in an espn truck last weekend told me that ESPN uses 'circle-surround.'  It's their own exclusive product.  I asked what it was good for and he said, "for the 2 people out there that have the receivers."

He said there are currently only two models out there that receive it.  One being a kenwood.  I forgot the other.  He said that pro logic will decode it, but not accurately.

This might be the case for the HD signal.

I found this information on the internet: Circle Surround

I remember seeing something on the screen in an ESPN header during the game about circle surround. I just figured it was some "expanded" 5.1 or something like that.

circle surround is a matrixed 5.1 surround system. supposedly it provides better separation than DPLII and better bitrates in compression than DD5.1 (well, that part is fact). The problem is that the relative scarcity of decoding equipment makes it difficult for more than a handful of people to enjoy it.
