TWC Customers asks DirecTV HD Question

I know not much about satellite things so Pardon My Ignorance on this matter (in fact, PMI on most other matters, too).  My dad has DirecTV and an HD ready (non widescreen) TV.  All I know is he as the package that gives him BBC America and Fox Sports World.

What sort of things does he need to do to fix himself up w/HD.  Does he need to swap out his box in the same vein as us TWC customers?  or does he need to go OTA.  I did suggest he call DirecTV, however, Customer Support is hit and miss w/regards to certain bits of knowledge.

Thanks In Advance

He needs to replace both his box and his dish.  The HD programming is on 2 other satellites so he needs the oval dish with 3 LNBs and also needs an HD receiver.

Thanks,

Does he trade them back into DirecTV and pay the difference?

I don't know of any trade-in program with Directv (direct that is), however you may find a dealer willing to take a trade.  The only problem with dealers is they are hoping to get NEW customers that sign up as a new subscriber so they can get their commission.  I personally just went out and bought what I wanted, there are a lot of different boxes, some with OTA receivers and I'd think you'd definitely want a box with OTA in it to get the local HD/digital stations.

Thanks for taking the time.  Very much appreciated.

have him call directv and ask for customer retention. Have him tell them that he is looking to get started in HD and his cable co is offering free box (which they basically are) and free locals... DirecTV should hook him up with something.. a rebate, some free hardware (thought not a box probably), maybe installation.. give them a call and hear what they are willing to do to keep him.. hence it being called customer retention.

I just converted from satelite to HD satelite about a month ago.  Recvd a hi def box, HD antenna, oval dish & install at a greatly reduced rate.  If he did not receive a card for a discounted conversion offer have him call DirecTV and inquire.  He should get everything for about $450.
