I guess they call them Direct View.  WHo makes them and at what price and size?  I would need 36" or under.

Dick,

Almost everyone makes them.  They are also known as traditional tube tvs.  An HD model can range in price from about $800 to $2000 depending on the size, features, and manufacturer.  Any local electronics retailer should have a good selection.

IMHO, Toshiba makes many of the great tube-based TV's.  Fantastic power regulation results in consistent pic quality regardless of APL.  Sony is over-rated.  As good as the Sammy DLP's are, stay away from their tubed brothers.

I just purchased this after reviewing the dominant players in the 34" widescreen direct view market. The sets I have reviewed are Sony 34"WS, Phillips 34" WS, Zenith 34" WS, Panasonic 34" WS and the Toshiba 34" WS. IMHO the Toshiba had the best HD and SD image. The zenith was tempting since it had the built in OTA tuner but image Qulaity and lack of 480P input nixed that choice. The other units were all sans  OTA HD tuner as one would expect with the market dominated by HDTV rady units. Sears had an open box OTA STB by sylvania for $135 with remote and manual. This unit normally sells for $349. All in all the Toshiba's build quality and pricture swayed me.

Good luck
