Following ESPN's much despised lead, it appears that CBS (or is it CBS 58) has decided to strech the SD feed on the digital signal for today's Packer/Chiefs game to 16:9.

I HATE it! and so does my wife.

Anyone else care to weigh in?

You ought to see it in 100 inches.....it is pure Sh*t!!!!  Why even bother? It looks terrible.

Bent_MG

Ugh, you know the state of DTV is in a very sad state when on a day of major sporting events, you don't even bother to turn on the DTV receiver anymore and just stick with analog because those DTV signals always get screwed up somehow during big events. :(

I agree, it's horrible. I was hoping it was just a mistake at the local station (someone forgetting to flip a switch) that would go away.

We're sitting off to either side of the set so the players don't look like dwarves (since there's no way to undo the stretching with the SA3100)

Yikes!  Worst spectacle of 'HD' ever.  :drink:  At minimum, I wish they left the streching option to the viewer.
Maybe thier HD feed is only temporarily down, leaving only the SD from Lambeau for a quarter or so...

Tom Snyder

We already have the stretching option... it's called the analog channel!

BTW.. this game wasn't scheduled for HD, so there isn't an HD feed to be down.  But I was just counting on the little extra clarity of of an upconverted (and non-stretched) SD signal .

Another CBS viewer saying, don't stretch the SD.  Stretched sports is bad.

please send CBS58 an email detailing your dissatisfaction.  we need to make some noise so this kind of thing stops.

Here is what I sent:
I just wanted to weigh in regarding the quality of Sundays broadcast of NFL football.
I am watching it on Time Warner Cables' channel 505 (your HD channel).  It would seem
that the game was stretched to fill a 16:9 screen.  It looks terrible. I spend a lot of money
to receive and enjoy High Definition.  My guess is that your advertisers spend  a lot with you
as well. I'm just curious if these advertisers accept your decision to alter the presentation of
their products. My guess is that the individuals who choose state of the art televisions and
cable packages are the demographic your advertisers would want to reach: we clearly spend money.
Just thought you needed to know that there is at least one person out here who appreciates
your adoption of high definition broadcast, but who's appalled by todays quality.

CBS is doing this.  WISC Madison is stretched also.

Yes I agree the stretched version we saw today was terrible. Even worse,  I had a whole houseful of people watching and many commented on the poor pq. Then the Pitt/Den game came on and they were all cursing why the Packer game didn't
look this good. To soothe their anger I said perhaps we are lucky we didn't see the end this way. ( But they really were impressed with the 2nd game PQ.

But the local breaks and promos appeared stretched as well... did they just do it because the source was stretched?

No mention of this on the "national" boards.

Thank goodness that the Pack plays mostly on FOX ;)

I was going to post something on AVS to ask about it, but with Ken H's bedside manner I passed...

Figured the fact that it was a local issue probably would have gotten my post deleted. And that because it dealt with non-hidef material that would have gotten me killed. :p

I'm glad I didn't invite anyone over for the game....

Yeah... look at my widescreen TV!  Look at those blurry, squat football players!  Don't you want to buy an HDTV too? :)

On top of it, the Packers lost... it would have been an ugly scene.
