Thanks for the info on 720p.  You guys are right, I read the articles and found a link on ESPN's website noting that they use 720p.

Can there be a difference between ABC OTA channel 12 versus Direct TV ESPN HD that would affect picture quality?  For some reason that ESPN HD picture has always been excellent, and the MNF production just hasn't been as good.

There will be a slight difference between Satellite and OTA due to bandwidth constraints and the need for more compression algorithms.  Directv I think uses a full 20 megabit stream, whereas OTA has to squeeze it into a 6 Megahertz channel.
