I'm sitting here watching Threat Matrix and WISN has their bright 12 in the corner again.  If you find it as annoying as I do, call 414-342-8812 and leave a message for their Programming department.

Stations like to put their logo in those corners so that when you videotape the program and you decide to make copies of it and sell the videos, this way they know it was a pirated copy and trace who did it.  Ever since the VCRs and recordable DVDs have come about people have made several attempts to record the programs and sell them to the public thus violating copyright rules.

Remember those olden days 50s, 60s, and 70s stations never had to destroy a programs content by embedding their station logo in the corners.

I think that used to be true but with the emergence of hundreds of cable channels the various programmers want to maintain brand identity.
Can't always tell what you're watching by the channel number on cable (i.e. chan 58 is 5) so those damn  logos are inserted so you can make sure to mark your Nielsen diary correctly Even CNN and Fox got on board. It seems using the bugs in infectious.

Nielsen doesn't use diaries anymore.. it's all people meters. The box on top of your TV automatically knows what station you're watching and how mnay people are in the room with you.

The Law

And with the finger print readers built into the remote controls since the late '90s, demographic information is more accurately reported.  ie. if you are at your neigbours house or the babysitter is watching something that would skew the statistics for your household.  ;)

I just wanted to send a couple complaints their way in an effort to make them think twice (maybe at least once) before they start putting the banner ads on HD.  I mean, if we complain about something simple like the station logo, wouldn't they anticipate more complaints when they use invasive banners?  Maybe they won't follow the band wagon and just put advertising where it belongs: at the commercial breaks.

Blatant, omni-present branding is just the nature of the marketing beast today.

I guess it's selective irritation. We are bugged (pun intended)  by the translucent network (and local affiliate) bugs while we're watching TV, but if we just look down a few inches, we see the brand name of  the manufacturer of your TV, even larger.
