Can't of sad news for WMVS

I emailed Karen Cooper to see if WMVS was planning on sending through 16x9 digital feeds for the PBS shows that are such. She said that because people depend on the schedule of the four feeds and will only interrupt it for true HD programming. I asked because I was hoping the Chuck Jones Great Performances would be 16x9. Looks like I'll have to zoom it on my box, though at least that looks a little better than zooming it on my TV.

What people? Who are they? How many of them are there? They keep mentioning that they won't do HD because of complaints from these "people" who want the multicast. And ignore the feedback from over 100 others. I've got to wonder if this is just one or two friends who have DTV's and give some money. This allows them to hold public tv HD hostage to their desire for Teletubbies at 11PM. MPTV better step back and take a look at the numbers and start listening to the HD public and not one or two "insiders".

I've often wondered who these "multi-cast people" are also. Could there be a secret Milwaukee sect of people who prefer multi-casting to true HD? Hmmmmmm.......

I don't think I've met anyone other than an advertiser that liked multicasting. The quality on CBS is really suffering today especially with audio pops. I'd be willing to bet that fewer than 2 people in the Milwaukee area "depend on those feeds." She's lying and it's obvious.

Just take a look over at 10.1 now. It's gorgeous. I don't see why they would want the other crap upconverts they show. There's nothing that makes the impression that HD does. It's a show about trains and I'm flipping to it between timeouts/breaks.

What I'm getting at is the sheer aroogance of determining a public TV's basic operating procedure based on the "complaints" of a few. At the same time the "complaints" of the many (us) are ignored. The multiple feeds they run are available on satellite so just what is the problem. What is wrong with this city when local businesses intentionally ignore their customers and diss them. Memo to MPTV: Got no money for ya this year, so ya better ask the multicasting people.

Yes I really like to know who these people that like multicasting.  Every one I know that can receive DTV wants to watch HighDef programming.  What are they trying to replace the MDS systems at 2.5GHz that provide programming to schools.  Yeah if you ever wondered what all those dishes on towers on the MPS buildings and others are, are MDS microwave television for educational purposes.  The main transmitters for all that is on the Dorms at UWM.  You don't need to waste a HiPower television station to address the needs of the educational establishment, the system is already in place for that.

Me too, no money for MPTV this year....Bah Humbug!

I've alredy written to them to let them know they won't be getting my support any more untill they wise up and give us the HDTV we want.

They are clearly not listening to the largest segment of digital viewers out here, and for a non-profit public system, it makes no sense to multi-cast.

It is eleven thirty on a Saturday night!  Who the hell do they think is watching that damn kiddie show on 10-4!!!

It is as bad as the damn eagles!

Maybe we need to set up a new Web site for this hidden group of Multcasting afficionados...
 www.MilwaukeeMulticasting.org

Or we could just start by adding a forum here for the multicasting fans, so they can have their own area to post thier feedback.

Heck...I'll even let Karen be the moderator.

per my post about a chat with the GM of WMVS, it is quite clear they are merely protecting the contract they have with Time Warner.  Clearly, he is more interested in cable viewers capable of viewing the digital channels without needing a HD receiver than us who have invested in this technology.  I personally am concerned about this for the long term.  Karen Copper, by the way is not part of the management of ch10.  She is merely echoing what she is told by top managment.

While I realize that WMVS has been in the forefront of the Digital Television conversion I am slightly appalled at the lack of High Definition  programming.  I am afraid I don't understand the use of mulitcasting during the evening hours with a 3 hour delay of 10 and 36 plus PBSKIDS and PBSU.  PBSU is available to most persons via cable or satellite and PBSKids has no place being aired at hours when the viewing audience isn't available.  MPTV should be using this time to provide HDTV programming to the adult audience, I realize that everything at MPTV is VideoTaped with HD equipment however only Tracks Ahead is produced in HDTV.  This seems a ridiculous waste of technology.  Please rethink your reasoning and provide us adults who have invested in the future with the available HighDef programming from PBS and find another way to feed Warner Cable with your multicasting efforts.  You are just a stones throw from their Cable Plant and should be able to use other technology such as microwave or fiberoptics to provide them with these signals.

I for one will not be sending my check to the Friends of 10 and 36 this year as I don't feel my donations are being properly utilized.

Here's the cookie cutter response I got from viewer services at MPTV.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to send in your comments; feedback from
viewers is important to us.  New technologies are exciting and offer a
great deal; I truly understand how you feel about the situation.
Currently the station is not being offered a tremendous amount of
programs.  The programs that are offered to the station we air.  The
station does have goals to produce more local program in HD.  In fact,
we are currently taping other program segments in HD.  However, right
now there is only one edit system at the present time and are not able
to do all our work ing HD yet.
We will be producing more HD programming in the later part of this
year.  I ask for your patience as we make these transitions.

Thank you for your interest in Milwaukee Public Television.

Allow me to translate:

Hello,
Thanks for sending another one of those annoying HDTV hobbyist letters to us again. This is really getting old. Here are some of the lame reasons they told us to give you to try and stall you off. New technologies are exciting and offer a
great deal; I truly understand how you feel about the situation. I feel your pain. Currently there isn't a lot of HD programming being offered and since we usually broadcast it at some oddball time different from anyone else, we aren't set up to record HD yet as the interns are out to get coffee then. We'd love to produce more in HD but we haven't read the directions for the edit bay yet.
Check back with us later this year (actually in about 2 years) and we'll give you the same cock and bull story. I ask for your patience as we make these transitions.

Thank you for your interest in Milwaukee Public Television.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Come here brother, let me feel your pain...

You know they started to air HD programming for us and you guys are still not happy.  I wouldn't blame them for looking at this site and saying forget them lets go back to what we were already doing.  At least they are providing what they can from PBS.  I know they are trying to get the equipment in and installed to air local HD programs.  I know people from the station look at this website and are trying to make you guys happy.  Like I said before I don't blame them for saying forget it.  If you want to know what they are airing then check out their website for the schedule.  You guys would be pissed off if they aired the same HD loop all the time.
