Disappointing DirectTV development

Well, it was bound to happen I guess, HDNet for free was now rolled into their HD package for $11 a month.  My dad has been a DirectTV subscriber for a few years, and this spring he bought a second receiver (Hughes E86) and is quite happy.  Well, his first (non-hd) receiver died a few days ago, so he bought a replacement.  Problem was that they told him that they had to re-program his entire service and as a result he lost HDNet.

Needless to say, he's feeling somewhat slighted by this.  After all, should it be his fault the equipment failed?  No, and I don't blame DirecTv for this either.  However, they should still grandfather people in for situations like this I feel.

Anyone else have any advice or suggestions?  Cable is not an option, and Dish network would be, however not if he needs a new receiver.

He was going to lose HDNet Sept. 1 anyway. Too bad he lost it a month early though. I wouldn't mind paying for the HD channels if only I could trade in the crap channels ! As it is, I am canceling HBO in favor of the HD package.
Goodbye Soprano's.......:(
