So I'm watching Desperado on HBOHD tonight.  In my opinion, it is the best movie of all times, so I own the tape, regular DVD and SuperBit DVD of the movie.  I synched the DVD with HBO and started experiementing.  The difference between regular DVD and HD was clear. HD was much more superior.

SuperBit DVD and HD difference, on the other hand, was surprsing. I obviously expected HD to blow away DVD but it turned out differently. First, there was a bit more pixelation on DVD then HD. But the difference was very minor and only noticable within 3 feet of my 65 inch TV. Surprsingly the colors, especially the black and white levels blew away HD broadcast. Overall, I think,  the picture was actually much better and more defined on a SuperBit DVD.
Both DVD and HD are coming through the same input so all the levels are adjusted equally. Granted, I spent close to a grand on my DVD player about two years ago but still...............

Desperado is considered to be an "only okay to good"  HD transfer. The Superbit is an excellent DVD transfer however. When you see a great HD transfer (Shrek, Gladiator, etc), even an excellently transfed DVD just can't compare.
Also keep in mind that just like DVD's, there are good, bad, and downright ugly HD transfers. Don't always assume that just because it's "HD" that it's going to look reference quality.

I personally have seen some DVD's that look pretty damn good, and I have seen some real garbage  (PQ wise) on HBO-HD.
