MPTV get it together

I wish Channel 10 (8) would get it together.  Tonight during fund-raising they are running a program produced by WHA (Madison) about the Wild Areas of Wisconsin that are protected....WHA produced it in HDTV and I'm sure that the photography is excellent but of course they are showing it on channel 10.  Wouldn't it make sense to be also running this program at the same time on channel 8 digital.  I think it makes sense..but no instead they have Tracks Ahead running over..DOH :bang:

Get it together MPTV if you've got a program like this or NOVA that's in HD...run it at the same time on channel 8 in HD....I might think about renewing my membership...but I haven't for the last 2 years because you people just don't get the idea. (And yes I've sent this and other items like this directly to them...without response...)

Here's the note I sent to 10/36 viewer services and the response I got.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was rather disappointed that tonights showing of WHA's "Wild Places" was not shown on 8 digital.  This fantastic program was produced in HDTV and should have been shown in such a format.  For fund raising purposes don't you think that those that have invested in Digital Technology would probably have greater resources to help with your fund raising????

Gregg,

Thanks for taking the time to e-mail us concerning the "Wild Places" program. It is a well-done and beautiful program. I don't know why the program was not on Channel 8.  I have forwarded your question to the Programming department at the stations.

Currently, our fundraising technology hasn't caught up with the digital technology...but we are working on it!  I'm not sure if the equipment has been purchased by the stations to literally simulcast the programs on 10 and 8, but I do know that that purchase is in the stations' budget.

The video of the program is available for a $100 renewal membership with the Channel 10/36 Friends.

Many thanks for sharing your concerns.

Sincerely,
Theresa M. Aten

And here's is their latest reply and followed by my reply:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gregg,

A quick update on the Wild Places not being broadcast on Channel 8...it was not offered as an HD program for broadcast.  But is may appear sometime in May

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then explain why it was in 16:9 aspect ratio and in the titles the overlay
popped up and said in HDTV where available.

And the latest response is::::?????

WMVS was only given the rights to broadcast "Wild Places" on WMVS in March.  The HD rights are available for WMVS-DT8 beginning in May.  We can only broadcast what we have the rights to broadcast.

I'm sorry these aren't the answers you are looking for, but those are the realities of program contract rights and costs.  As I mentioned before, "Wild Places" is scheduled to broadcast in May on WMVS-DT 8.

If you require a further technical explanation, you would need to contact the stations through their website at //www.mptv.org.

StarvingForHDTV

Though I didn't try to watch that specific program, I have had many sour experiences with 10-1.  It's too bad that they don't pass along a bunch of programs that are widescreen standard definition as well.  In addition their channels have compression artifacts (is that the right term?) well what I mean is they are trying to cram 5 channels down a single pipe and all of the channels suffer with picture quality issues.  During HD this is not the case though.

Frustrating.

Just got a reply from Tom Dvorak at channels 10/36 and he says he contacted the producer and they state the program was NOT shot in HD but only in WideScreen.  (Of course this doesn't explain why at the bottom of the Screen it said IN HD WHERE AVAILABLE.)

mr_yeti

Some might refer to that as a mistake...
Possibly an honest one.

I don't have a problem with any of the PBS multicast channels broadcast OTA in the Milwaukee area. Channel 10-0 obviously is the least resolute of the bunch. the rest all look pretty good.
I'd prefer HD Tracks Ahead over anything else, as I'm an avid model railroader and was a supporter of bringing it back after funding was unavailable several years ago! To each his own, I guess.  :)

Pat

Does anybody watch any of the DTV multi-channels ever?

I know I don't.  The delayed broadcast of 10 and 36 is very inconvenient and the resulting time slots are inappropriate, and the other 3 have nothing I care to watch.

If I'm correct that nobody is watching, then they should reconsider their programming.  Who is going to pay thousands of dollars and then watch kids shows in the evening?

Sorry to say it, but that PBS Kids has come in handy, especially when I was having satellite difficulties.

I have an idea why don't we take a poll here on the website.  Do people watch the multi-cast or not.  Also include the question if ch 35 has HD all the time do you care if ch 8 multicasts.  This way you will have hard numbers to give the station managment.

Gregg Lengling

Actually MPTV has made it public knowledge that when 35 goes live they will dedicate one to HD and the other to Multicasting...so I guess the poll would be a moot point.

I think a poll would still be an interesting and fun fact-finding endeavor! This forum could use a little action, if you ask me!;)
